Hello fellow Märkli-fans Märklin has a lot of advantages over other brands on the market, but one of them isn't the optical appearance of the tracks. I'm refering to the electrical contact on the ties. Now I know they can't disappear because that would take away Märklin's superior contact abilities. My question is how I can weather the track (ties and rails) to make the little spikes less obvious? Since I am a beginner I have unfortunately already lain the track with track bed so airbrushing is out of the question. The track bed is Woodland Scenics dark brown medium sized granulate. Follow the link for a picture. http://rides.webshots.co...187854270042199592OMIZZQAdditionally I'll have to "clean up" the tracks by removing remaing gle and ballast, but my main concern is the weathering: which colours to use? Which technique/s? How do I clean afterwards to guarantee the current to run as before? Thankful for any advice // Magnus

Thank you for the advice. I really like your results. Did you use Heki or Revell or another brand and which colour for the ties and rails respectively? Thank you! Perhaps someday I will have room for a larger layout with more interesting train opperation than what I have now. However, considering that we now live in a three room appartment I am glad to have a layout at all. http://rides.webshots.com/album/547807257eYFcolI like the rusty color of the C-track on your picture with the BR 85 http://steventrain.fotopic.net/p54473945.htmlWhich paint did you use? we buy the cheap bottles of acrylic paint available at local sewing and craft stores here in the USA. There are two brands (in identical bottles) one is 'Folk art' the other is 'Americana' They cost about 60c for 59ml !
I used a variety of browns and for rust stuff I use their color called iron oxide.
Edit: corrected price to 60c (I typed 40c initially) |

Not so cheap here, a bottle of 'Folk Art' costs around 4 USD.

I use Humbrol/Airfix #113. I think it is simply called "rust". It´s a thinner based paint (right phrase?), so is not exactly healthy, but shold be standard inventory in most modellers inventory ;-)
I paint the rails using a brush. It´s quite tedious work. -Especially if the track has been laid already. |

I use sinthetic paint of various colors, applied with brush. In particular we tried to reproduce the different kinds of dirt of the ballast: in the station, where trains stop for long times, there is leaking of oil, so we apply thin black color. When the train brakes, the friction surfaces leave a red-brown color in the ballast (near a signal). IMHO this gives more variety to ballast and the layout seems more realistic.
