Hi, A few weeks ago, this Faller AMS 4003 City set found it's way to Holland. It's the 1st version from 1968/69, with a VW 1300 Beetle and a Büssing truck, both with a slow gearing zinc chassis for slow running traffic operation. The 4003 City was originally scheduled for 1964, but never came out. It wasn't until another starter set - the 4009- was withdrawn from the shops due to technical problems with the turnouts, that the once planned 4003 was dug up from the archive and made her first appearance in the program (in 1968). This also explains why a Ford Taunus and VW 1300 is on the cover illustration, but inside the box is a Büssing truck and VW 1300 Beetle and not a Ford Taunus. The Faller brothers just used the old illustration for the new 1968 4003 set. This 'shortcoming' was quickly solved in 1970, with a new version of 4003 with a new cover showing the Büssing truck and VW 1300. Marco |

Very cool! The red ford Taunus like the box shows would be cooler than the truck.

Hello Marco I had a love affair with Faller AMS and this set sure was great. When I started in 1965, the road edges were brown and later went white (around 1968?) Until I stopped using this Faller AMS, in 1969 to go to the Army in Germany, I think the zinc frames were not so common (a later model perhaps?). Probably the zinc frame brought a lot of advantages because earlier models had a plastic frame, too light to have enough slider pressure on the road. Indeed the traffic gear was way better than the racing gear, propulsing cars like rockets Here is one of my favorite videos on the subject Faller AMS Stadt Cheers Jean |

Our super talented forum member Micha made some fantastic AMS layouts too. His small AMS-Marklin winter layout, already 10 years ago, is one of the best AMS layouts I've seen. |

Cool stuff. I’ve been wanting to get one of these sets, etc, but they are so expensive. I’ve known about Faller AMS for a while but didn’t know how well it integrated with Marklin.

Sounds great Marco, especially the AMS fun with the boys. My boy, just under 50, has many things to do and his passion is classic cars. So no thrills with a classic Faller or Märklin, but what a passion for a V12! Cheers Jean |

@Steve, yes these starter sets can be relative expensive, € 200 - € 300 and even (a lot) more. And some ebay sellers ask crazy fantasy prices.
But track pieces are cheap, good ones € 1 or € 2 each. And AMS cars or trucks start with € 25 - € 30, depending on what you're looking for, the type of chassis, block motor or zinc motor etcetera.
So starting with AMS does not have to be expensive (if you avoid these crazy priced starter sets).

Steve It was designed right from the start to work well with Märklin, and other brands. But you do need the slower "Traffic" chassis to look sensible. Running at Racing car speeds in a model railway just looks silly, unless you are actually modelling a racing circuit Another Steve |

I have the 4003 City starter set with the Taunus and VW 1300 on the cover and the Büssing truck and VW 1300 Beetle inside. I opened the vehicles, they have the same gearing shown in Marco's picture but the chassis is plastic, no zinc. I asked for this set when I was a lot younger mainly because they advertised components that allowed the integration with Märklin trains. Thanks for any input. Harold.

Hello Harold, The best way is to look in the Faller catalogs to determine which year etc. See screenshots from the 1968, 1969 and 1970 catalog. You can also check a good website or forum, there are many Faller related sites, but to name one; The Faller AMS Club Sweden, see here; http://www.faller-ams.se/grundsats.htmlAbout the zinc chassis, the chassis itself is plastic, it's just the top bearing plate that is a zinc alloy. Marco Thanks Marco! Thanks for the link to the AMS Club Sweden. Mine set is 1968 or 1969 vintage, by the catalogue information. The top bearing plate on my vehicles is definitely plastic. The pick up shoes are copper coloured and do not have the perforations as shown in your photos. Cheers, Harold.

Hello Harold, Faller produced many chassis variations. In the past there were quite a few good Faller AMS hobby websites showing all the different motor/chassis types and such, but unfortunately some of these sites have disappeared. The site "The world of Geogus" is still there and has some good information on the different chassis, maybe it can help you to identify the chassis you have. See here: LINKMarco |

Hi Mark Apparently, Faller re-issues old and beloved models like this B214. I bought mine less than 10 years ago. Here it is with LED lighting and an old Faller motor Alas the vibration motor is discontinued so the B215 is not available In the same vein, there was the B230 water mill, initially with a vibration motor and a very noisy contraption to activate the sawblades. I purchased a re-edition from Faller but using the synchrone motor Sorry, no picture Cheers Jean |

I may have missed the note somewhere, however, it appears that "faller-ams.se" (Faller AMS Sweden) site can not be reached. Has it moved? Just wondering as I always liked to drift over there and refresh my AMS soul |
