So I have a Marklin 28703 historic 1930 SJ Swedish passenger train set. It has 3 lighted cars that get their power from the loco via weird tongue-like couplers. For reasons I'm saving for a different post, the loco cannot supply power through the coupler. To get the cars to light, I've jury rigged a 73405 pickup shoe to the bottom of one of the cars. It works great until it gets to a turnout. There it shoots a few sparks and shorts the track for a second. I've tried adjusting the shoe higher, lower, and on an angle. Nothing seems to let it go through the turnout cleanly. Any suggestions?

Common thing with metal bogie cars with a slider. Or the slider is too long for the frogs, or touching a wheel or coupler going through.

Can you share a picture of where you have positioned the pickup shoe?

If in the middle of the wagon, it will swing inwards and maybe even catch on some of the center pins. Ideally they should be placed under a bogie, where they track the center between the wheels.

Try positioning it as close to one of the axis as possible on 2-axis wagons. Short shoes like Marklin 100032 (45mm) or a Roco 40064 (42mm) could also help, such that they don't deviate too much from the center.

I had the shoe just a little short of center of a 2 axle passenger car. I'll try moving it closer to one of the axles...

If possible place slider on the bogie and check that a 73406 slider is required to avoid the coupler pocket. I don’t have these coaches so can not be sure if these comments are possible.
Take care I like Marklin and will defend the worlds greatest model rail manufacturer.

Hi,

have you got a multimeter? Try pushing the wagon with power off on the turnout. Have the multimeter touching the center pins and one of the rails. When you hear a beep, you can observe what is touching what. You'll need three hands though (or jaw clips on the multimeter).
