Good morning to all
Last night i enjoyed the classic movie "derailed" on TV about a runaway freight train and i must say those diesels would look pretty good on my tracks!
I could not find any evidence that M* ever brought out modern US lok (GP 38???) in HO-scale. Anyone knows if there is such a diesel on the market for 3-rail? Alternatively, anyone ever put a slider (for 3-rail operation) under such a lok from another manufacturer?
Happy Holidays

ESU brought out a few versions of the SD-40 that was both 2 rail and 3 rail capable, but they were very unreliable and I believe taken off the market fairly soon after introduction. https://www.eurorailhobbies.com/ESU/ESU-31450

Marklin has not produced anything other than the Alco PA1 and GE F7 series locos. But other companies have produced H0 locos for Marklin, but they were very limited. Some members on here have modified other manufacturers modern US series locos to run on Marklin. I think Alsterstreek has on his Desmaigne thread.

Thanks for the info and link's Yes, Marklin 3-rail (either analog or digital), then again ones it has a slider (aka grinder) under it it's considered for Marklin right? I have a 2-rail DC Mehano Canadian Bullet steamer (analog 2-rail), that has pretty nice detail, but have not found a way yet to add a slider under it to use on mi layout... The lok's in the link look a bit on toy-like judged on the pic's.... need to do a bit more research on them.... I like the ones from "scaletrains" https://www.scaletrains....lability=37&brand=52Look nicely detailed, anyone converted one of these? Regards Jean-Pierre

Hi Jean-Pierre,
Now I am confused: Is is his about a loco „born“ for running on Märklin „3-rail“ or a „2-rail“ loco to be converted for running on Märklin „3-rail“? In the latter case there is unfortunately no easy „one size fits all“ solution. |

Hi Ak
Sorry for the confusion...
It really does not matter that much, "born" Marklin compatible from the factory would be great, but is seemingly hard to get.... So i would not mind getting one "born" DC / 2-rail and convert it to be Marklin compatible, would be a nice project i guess, and besides the pick-up shoe installation, not to difficult to do. Found quite a number of them (used) on-line from different US manufacturers that look pretty nice....
Looked at the pictures of yours in your "Desmaigne" thread, really neat, did you convert those or are they factory original?
Greetings
Jean-Pierre

Except for the Santa Fe warbonnets (both EMD F7 and Alco PA) all locomotives have been subject to various degrees of customisation. Some Märklin diesels received different paint schemes. The only fully converted loco is a KATO Alco RS3 (assisted by another esteemed forum member). Other “hybrid” solutions: Proto 2000 EMD E8 powered by pick-up shoe under “permanently” coupled Märklin baggage car and KATO EMD GP 35 lash-up with one dummy-fied unit carrying a pick-up shoe to power “shoeless” motorised units. I once motorised a “stand-alone” Märklin F7B unit to “empower” various EMD GP dummies, the latter being stripped “2-rail” locos. Two EMD GP7 dummies are Athearn shells placed on modified Märklin EMD F7 dummy undercarriages equipped with a pick-up shoe, respectively; the latter serve to power Proto 2000 EMD GP 30 locos. However, it should be noted that a conversion is cumbersome (the reasons have been elaborated in other posts) and results are mixed. Another solution would be to have a layout with separate circuits for Märklin and DC operations, like on this double-track Sherman Hill layout, where one track is “3-rail” and the other “2-rail”: Edited by user 18 December 2022 19:37:56(UTC)

Good morning Ak Nice! Thanks for giving me some excellent "food for thoughts"! Your a man after my own heart! I like your ideas, especially the permanent fixed wagon with a pick-up shoe and a second track for "2-rail" ops. So up to the "drawing board" to figure out what to do and how to start.... I should spend some more time going thru your old postings to get some more ideas Thanks again Regards Jean-Pierre

Thank you! Below thread wraps up my conversion and kit bashing adventures: https://www.marklin-user...-and-Conversion-projectsMy mantra: “2-rail” to “3-rail” locomotive conversion = a lot of pain -> abstain! In the future, I’ll limit myself to shell swapping and painting exercises. |
