Hello all,
I have the Marklin gauge 1 Crocodile 5736, number13254 (DC).
I would like to make it digital, and I am wondering if somebody done it already.
A few more questions:
Are the DC motors OK to have a decoder added, or do they have to be changed?
What decoder is used in the digital model or which other would do?
Is there one decoder for both motor, or do they each require their own decoder?
I cannot find any infos about the decoder used in the new model, but I can see a few decoder for gauge one on eBay. The Uhlenbrock 77200 seems to give 3A, so enough to power both motor. Would that be OK?
I'll appreciate any infos or link to give an answer to these questions.

Once a motor is upgraded to digital, the current is made DC by the decoder to the motor so yes. An A/C motor runs fine but faster with D/C without any rectifier. An A/C motor can not run on A/C without it.
Depending on the commutator type, wether can motor, or brush type with
wound coil or a permanent magnet, the coil needs to be changed to a magnet on the brush type as in the older Markilin motors. Resistors may also be needed on the brush plate.
Decoders include instructions for this, wiring, and set-up and function settings, as well as CV values.
Depending upon your controller, it may be MM (Marklin Motorola), MFX with auto detection/install (M4 for ESU mfx), or DCC such as the ESU ECOS with railcom, or Zimo like the Roco Z21 uses. The Marklin CS3's, ESU Ecos, and Roco Z21's are multi protocol control systems, as are the latest deocders.
There are limits to functions and or calibration with marklin decoders with an ECOS or Z21, and limits with other decoders on a Marklin system. The CS3's work for Trix 2 rail DCC as well.
If use a Marklin 6021 controller, you will be able to access several sound functions, just not as easily as with the CS3.

Hello, ESU has decoders for Gauge I. See https://www.esu.eu/en/pr.../loksound/loksound-5-xl/Reading the manual of that decoder gives you an idea of what it is possible and what you need for the upgrade. Go to the ESU site in the downloads section, select Loksound 5. Regards, Miguel |

I had used the LokSound 5XL
in three locos 2 1gause and 1 MAXI with excellent results

I would second the recommendation of Miguel and Costas to use an ESU LokSound 5XL. One decoder is all that is needed. DC motors are good. They can be connected directly to the decoder motor outputs. Only AC motors need to be converted. |

Yes, agreed, the ESU decoder is the best, but... very expensive, around the $350, its is a lot for me.
