Hello,

I bought in ebay a 3048 at a good price. It is in a good condition, although not mint.
The seller has 100% positive rating.
The locomotive runs very well, and all seems to be ok!
Until now I didn't see anything missing, as I didn't see anything in the photos in Ebay.

In the description of the item, it was written the locomotive is in good condition except "Halteknäufe" (in german language) is missing in the tender.
When I translate "Halteknäufe" in DeepL I get "retention knobs". I don't know what those are. Can someone of you, please, help me understand what parts are the "Halteknäufe"?

Regards,

Miguel

It must be some kind of grip, knop or handle (from google search).
This ebay listing says that a halteknäufe on the tender is broken off (abgebrochen).
https://isking-modellbah...048-f-800-dampflok-br-01

My limited German dictionary has knauf (knäufe in plural) as button, and halt/halte as something to hold on to.

I was investigating a bit more. "Halteknäufe" also seams to mean handle.
In this case maybe it is the vertical bars painted in silver (I think they are not spearately applied) near the doors of the tender.
I would have called it "Handlauf" if DeepL translated from portuguese.
Now I rechecked the ebay photos and see that it is indeed not perfect, but what I received is in better condition and I can't see any problem...

I was also looking at some images of the latest version of other 3048s (my one is from 1970) and in those images
it seems that the very top of that "Halteknäufe" is higher, so probably bit extra that is missing.
I will continue investigate a bit more.

Miguel

Hi Miguel, the vertical hand rails, (at the trailing edge of those rubber flaps), have little loops on the top which are easily broken off. Could they be the issue?
In looking at mine I noticed I only have one of them☹️

Hi Dave,

Thanks for your post. Yes, it is exactly that!
My doubt now is if there are some different versions of the tender, where some versions have those
loop tops and others not.
I saw some photos where in one tender side it seems to be a crank instead of a loop and other photos
where on the side it seems to be a loop.
I also see some photos without any loop or crank.
Mine has no loop or crank but it also doesn't seem to anything broken...

Miguel

Hello John,

I will post it tomorrow as I just arrived home and I prefer to use daylight for the photos. At least for the outside I will do.

Hi John and all,

Here are some images of the tender of the 3048. I think inside all is very good.
The doubt is about the top of the handrails.

Do you think the handrails are broken or in this version they are like this?

Regards,
Miguel

No Doubt. I have 3 of them, including the F800. One has both missing and the other two have one missing, but on different sides. I had never noticed until I looked at this thread.

There are a few tender shells on eBay.de. I cannot guarantee that they are in perfect shape

Hello Mike,

Thanks for your post. I some there too but I saw no one in good condition. Well, not exactly like this, one seems to be but was the complete tender and costed the same I played for the locomotive.

Miguel

If you are a bit of a handy man you could form a loop with a wire and stick it on it., unless you get another one in the same condition (cold be pricey) I don't think it matters.

I will leave it as it is. It is not that important, and it's hard to understand (if possible at all) that something should be there.

As I heard a shopkeeper once say: "The more (details) they put on. The more is likely to fall off."

Very true. I set a new record for that when I broke some details on one of my Croc double set locs before it hit the track for the first time.

Jim

I have almost all Märklin and mostly HO, although I do have a small number of Z gauge trains!
So many trains and so little time.

I agree that there are too much plastic details now on the new HEAVY locs. I have the Re 4/4 from the set 37320 (Re 10/10) where, when I cleaned the wheels I broke a lot of plastic details near the wheels, I think in the prototype they are pipes that are supposed to drop sand onto the tracks for traction.
I also remember a person bringing the Big Boy to a group/club layout to run, and by the end of the day, lost a lot of plastic details that fell off when many hands handled the very heavy loc. That is why buying a used Big Boy on ebay may not be a good idea. Just my thoughts.
