I am starting to notice that Marklin is now offering passenger cars, as an example Marklin HO 43335, with a digital decoder included in the car to control the lights digitally.

1) Does anyone knows if the decoder can be bought on its own to retrofit other Marklin cars?

2) If anyone has passenger cars equipped with the decoder, what are the possibilities of the decoder, dimmer, light control etc?

Thanks

It's a function only decoder. Marklin doesn't yet list it that I could find. My Intercity cab car has it. It's a green 21 pin decoder. The CS3 function menu seems like it has more functions available and there is a sound decoder project available for the 43335. If it's a blue decoder, it's likely an ESU. If green, or black, other brand or specific to Marklin. The ESU decoder has 27 functions available. You can use an MLD3, MSD such as the Marklin 60940, or 60972 MFX, or an ESU M4 decoder which also has motor controls for lighting. You don't then use the black wire, but the orange. Follow the decoeder instrtuctions for which wires do what an connect where. Seal the tips of the non used wires of course.
These decoders are multi protocol compatible for MM, MM2, MFX-(M4), and DCC for Trix, etc.

the 43335 probably uses an mLD3 e.g 60972. since you can download the decoder project.

with Märklin mLD3/mSD3 you can reconfigure the motor outputs to AUX 5/6, giving you a function decoder with a total of 8 AUX out, to play with. All dimmable, with all the normal light control options.

note the the Aux 5/6 can take higher loads than the normaul AUX:
from the manual:
• Current load at the light outputs ≤ 250 milliamps
• Current load at AUX 1 – AUX 4 each ≤ 250 milliamps
• Current load at AUX + lights (total) ≤ 300 milliamps
• Current load for motor and AUX 5/6 ≤ 1.1 amps
• Maximum total load ≤ 1.6 amps
