Hello all, I purchased this BR80 for private firm Ruhrkohle AG (not sure when Märklin sold this) but it had only been out of the box to photograph. Everything is pristine, and I paid a small amount for the loco. I have a CS3+ controller. I used the database listing for 3404 to set the loco in the controller. I noted that the setting for 3404 was Address 78. I put it on my layout and it ran off at full speed. That is an oft occurrence for some locos, so no surprise. But it failed to reset itself so I removed it from the track. The accompanying user manual says nothing about switching from analogue to digital. In fact the manual says the loco from the factory is Address 80. So I set up a new locomotive in the CS3+ with digital address 80 but the BR80 behaved exactly the same. I am now showing a picture of the circuitry inside 3404, there is a 4 gang DIP switch with the figures 6080 printed on. The manual shows nothing about these DIP switches. There is certainly no DIP switch with 8 switches to reset the address, AND there is no board with potentiometers to set maximum speed and variable acceleration/deceleration. Is there a circuit board missing in this locomotive? Kimball Edited by user 03 September 2022 05:38:06(UTC)

Kimball Hi Kimball, I do note you see 6080 written somewhere but the DIP switch unit (or are they solder bridges- hard to see) looks like that of the old Delta digital units. And the chip number “701…(obscured by a wire)” can be seen, consistent with the 701.17 or 701.13 chips that were used in the delta decoders. I think in your picture all the dip switches are set to off, which then runs the unit as analogue, hence racing off as you describe. You can still set, I think, 15 digital addresses. Hope I am not “telling you how to suck eggs” Regards, Philip

Hi Kimball, The dip switches are set to OFF which is analogue as Philip has said. The table above gives the dip switch settings for digital operation. Regards, Bernard

Hello Kimball, I also got one of these & converted it to digital. Runs so much smoother with lokpilot MFX decoder & high propulsion motor: [img] [/img] [img] [/img] [img] [/img] [img] [/img] |

Hi Kimball/All, If you intend to upgrade the decoder think about Telex couplers, LED lighting etc See my article 3704 UpgradeLink corrected 30-12-2024 Hope it provides ideas for an upgrade Edited by user 30 December 2024 23:41:50(UTC)

Hello Philip, Bernard, Dave, Ross, and Nathan, Thanks so much for your replies and advice, which should settle the little beast into a digital environment easily. Yes Philip the box says it is a Delta loco. Dave and Ross - I won't bother with any upgrades to this loco because I purchased the latest 37068 BR80 which is MFX+ and has both end couplers operating Telex. I will report back in the next couple of days on how it runs. Kimball |

Hello all, I finally got around to setting the 4 gang DIP switch in the 3404, with number 1 to ON. It responded perfectly to the database entry on the CS3+ and indicating Address 78. Thank you all so much for helping me with information to do this.
The controller got to level 75 out of 100 before it would move. So I oiled the gears and axles with Märklin oil and it managed after a bit of running to start at level 40. The engine settles quite comfortably at a slow speed on level 25 in forward, and level 40 in reverse.
I am very pleased with this loco. I believe it is indicative of past Märklin practice where everything is made unbreakable. 3404 is one of the oldest in my possession, and only my second BR80. A very nice thing to own.
