Märklin set of 5 Fals-z freight wagons with limestone load

The set 46268 was presented as a new item 2021 and was released summer 2022. The cars are modeled after Dutch State Railways (NS) freight cars used in era V, around 1998. Distinct lettering Kalksteen in white and the blue NS logo is shown on the sides of the medium grey cars.

History

Limestone has been mined in Maastricht and Winterswijk, Holland, since about 100 years ago, but the Maastricht mine closed in 2018. Glass and steel manufacturing uses big quantities of limestone, and in it is also a major component in cement. Also agriculture and even food industry uses limestone.

Heavy stone in different forms is naturally suitable for railroad transportation. Since 1969 Fals freight wagons were used to transport the limestone in Holland. These wagons were also used to transport ore and cokes, although this damaged the wagons to the extent that limestone would leak from the cracks of the hoppers. Therefore there was a need for dedicated wagons for limestone transportation. Initially regular Fals wagons were used for this purpose, but later the Fals wagons were slightly modified to reduce the risk of leakage further - labeled Fals-z.

The first Fals-z wagons were introduced 1984 with the inscription Kalk. The following year additional wagons were made with the inscription Kalksteen. Since there was a big hurry to get the wagons in traffic, the lettering was skipped on many wagons.

By the beginning of the 2000s the wagons started to be phased out to be replaced by more modern Belgian Falns wagons in light green color.

Märklin 46268 wagons

Packaging is the common master box with individual boxes for each car. It makes the overall package more compact, but makes it harder to remove and repackage the cars compared to the styrofoam packaging that we see sometimes from Märklin,

The wagons are made mostly of plastic, but the end platforms and ladders are made of metal. Of course, the wheels are made of metal as usual on Märklin rolling stocks, and there is also a metal insert to increase the weight of the cars. A realistic looking limestone cargo is include with these cars. Further, the blue logo and the Kalksteen inscription and other lettering on the sides of the cars are crisp and looks really good. The overall appearance of this set is great.

Similar types of wagons have been released by Märklin in the past with different inscriptions. For instance 46254 with the lettering Kalk. The grey color is somewhat darker on this model.

Conclusion

Highly recommended set which looks great with the realistic limestone cargo. Runs well, like most of the modern Märklin boogie freight wagons, like the Fals wagons of different colors that we see released on frequent basis. A uniform consist of 10-15 Fals-z wagons would look prototypical on a model railroad. A mix with for instance silo container cars is also possible.

Hi roberts
Thanks for the comprehensive review.

Here's a video of Märklin 37126 with a rake of the old Fals-z wagons (46242), empty, and the new ones (46268) running on our club layout.

Besides the old ones being empty the side lettering is slightly different to the new ones.

Thanks for the video! I was looking for videos on YouTube but couldn’t find any. Good that you show a suitable engine to pull the cars, NS Class 1200. I don’t have a Dutch locomotive myself.

Nice layout you have in your club.
