Now that I'm at a stage of wanting to start some scratch building, I noticed that it appears that the commercial manufacture of brass I beams has gone away. Precision Metals of Chicago indicated they stopped production some years ago. Is there another supplier? |

Yes, I was looking for some round metal rod stock a couple months ago and there may be some brass I beam stock from China on Amazon.

I have yet to find any. eBay is usually full of the Chinese stuff. All I can find is remaining old stock of the K&S Precisions stuff (or it’s resale under the Albion UK brand) but there isn’t any more being made. I figured I might find “someone” like China making it and it being sold on Amazon it eBay but no luck. |

There are several manufacturers of various metal profiles for modeling in Europe / Germany, but do I need time to find them?

I think plastic has replaced brass for shapes. Micromark has brass, round and square tube, solid rods, sheets and flat strips.

But brass is electrically conductive so no need to run wires up the styrene to feed the leds under the platform canopy. And brass is stronger than styrene so making platform roof framing out is brass I beam is more resilient than styrene. |

It matters because the shipping cost from Germany to the US for any quantity is basically 50€ and up. So you end up paying a lot more for the simple material because of the shipping fees, than if you find a supplier at least in your own continent. In the end I may have to figure out what sort of brass I need in what shapes on the layout and buy it all in one big bulk purchase to limit the impact of the $55 shipping cost. |
