Hi all, who among us has the original folder (ring-binders) for replacement parts? I'm trying to narrow down the range, and year, each of them was produced. Not only are they helpful resource but they add a little colour to bookshelf. I have just one original, this Orange one from 1973 - 1975 which is possibly the most recognisable edition, but maybe I've simply seen more of them. As well as this Orange one with original sheets, I also have a folder of photocopies of almost all items up to the time that I was able to make from the originals back in the 90's - (courtesy of our master agent who allowed me to borrow them), but for some reason I never copied the folder cover, nor the supplement index sheets. This is my one which came to me some years later courtesy of a good friend/fellow enthusiast    Each issue of the folder, or update supplements comes with an Index of the sheets including printing code to ensure the dealer refers to the most up to date version.  If anyone has one (or more) of these folders, share your story, and maybe some photos |

To the best of my current knowledge, there were only two styles following this. Another Orange one with the updated logo, from 1976 and the Black one which I can only narrow down to the early-mid 1980's   Earlier versions to come..... |

Earlier versions to come..... I have an earleir version, from the time my father was repairing Marklin for H W Clarke ... I'll arrange a photo.

Right, spent some time down in the shed, and took some photos. Mine is a good bit older than yours.   The colour is dark blue, I think the picture has come out a bit light in colour (the background is about a baby blue colour). It has the tabs like yours, and a list of what should be in the folder. The most recent update (April 1967) appears to be for a single loco, and retains Edition B status.   The previous update was for edition B in 1966.  and contained a complete index along with individual list publication dates.  I also have a previous Edition A in a seperate folder, along with two editions from the era of 800 series items (these are not in a Marklin labelled folder, so I don't know if the Marklin folder I have originally contained these and they were archived to another folder, or if the Marklin folder arrived with Edition A - which I suspect is the most likely) . The Edition A appears to be the edition for when everything changed to four digit numeric catalog numbers.  I suspect this Marklin folder would have been the only one like it in NZ, as a lot of items seem to come back to HW Clarke for repair. I have never seen the Edition C that is mentioned in the 1967 letter. That may have ended up with trains and Hobbies in Auckland after the Marklin agency was purchased off Hank.

Thanks Alan, I was going to post an image of that version. There is a version, (possibly two) between your one and the Orange one. Off to work now but will post some more images hopefully tonight. PS, I am certain I saw one among the pile at Merv Smith Hobbies, I believe those ended up with them ex Ian Barrett ex Hank Edwards, ex Email Industries, ex H.W. Clarke Ltd !!  |

Merv Smith Hobbies certainly purchased the assets of Trains & Hobbies from the Barrett family.

My guesstimate of the earlier folders is as follows (happy to be corrected) Red - 1950's ?  Blue - late 50's / early - mid 60's ? (as per Alan's example)  Green - mid-late 60's ?  Orange (v1) - mid or late 60's to 1972 (image as per earlier comments above) Orange (v2) - 1973 - 1975 (slight logo change, the dot above the 'i' becomes angled like the umlaut Black - 1976 onward As I said, this is just a starting point with no basis in fact unless noted I would like to confirm with more certainty the introduction date for each of the colours but because of the very nature of ring-binding and loose inserts, unless you have one with confirmed originally dated pages, it's hard to be certain. Note also that there are some variation on the shades of colours I have found, but this may be nothing more than fading due to exposure to light, or the lighting/camera used. Take this Blue one for example;  And this one, which I'm having a hard time deciding if it's Green or Blue - for now, I'm not including them as different actual colours, until confirmed otherwise  |

I'm wondering if that would have contained the Release C, so would be between my blue one and your orange one. If that was a 1950s then I would expect the Release A documentation and earlier that I have to be in one like that. Just a thought.

The book is a collevtors item itself, and well worth buying.

Cheers Steve Coincidently I picked up the 1953-1980 Alle Einzeltiellisten parts catalogs this past week on eBay here in the US. Self-Published in 1990 by Karl Heinrich Altstaedt, it is a thick book with reprints of the parts lists and user manuals that accompanied the 1950's - 1980's locomotives and the exploded diagrams of most of the 3000-3100 series locomotives. Also has sections for parts kits and accessories. Looks to be a great reference. It is huge - not sure how many pages as they are not numbered in the traditional 1-XXX manner of regular books, but the catalog is almost 1 1/2 inches (3.5cm) thick - about the size of the old phone books/directories. Here's a picture of the cover.  |
