Hello all..
Is there a way to identify (easily) vintage locomotives? I have 43 that do not have their original boxes and the 1st few I’ve checked I can’t find any numbers on. Is there a reference available of some sort or am I not looking in the right places for the numbers?

Hi Jeff! Some may have the serial numbers embossed into the motor bogie bottom. Otherwise, they were a sticker with orange numbers. The other way is by the body colors, printing of the class, and country's railroad, road numbers, and if it is a plastic or metal body. That narrows it down for you, then you can refer to old Marklin catalogues, price lists, or a Kohls collectors book.
Example; A br 120 is an electric. The road number is on the lower sides either near the front or center. A manufacturers plate may also be present, ex; Krause Maffei, AEG, Krupp,
Brwon Boveri, SLM, etc.
Often, searching for the type, road number, and color, will give a search result on an e-bay, Catawiki, or other auction site.

The running number is usually visible and some sites allow you to search for the loco with that.

I found myself in the same position recently and the modelrailroad wiki proved invaluable. It doesn't have every single train especially for some of the other brands but it does seem to have most Marklins. https://www.modelrailroadcollector.wiki/en-us/
