Technical realization and model train
The entire system occupies an area of ​​around 50m2, contains approximately 600m of track and 7 stations. The track topology can be seen from the schematic representation. In reality, the track tracks circle the entire system between two stations. In this way, the travel times between the individual train stations are artificially extended in order to simulate realistic conditions during timetable operation.

On the part of the control and safety technology, all essential interlocking types can be represented: From the mechanical interlocking (Iggswil) from the early years of railway safety technology, to the so-called "switch mechanism" (Zetthausen), which embodied the introduction of electric drives at the beginning of the 20th century, all the way to In addition to ILTIS remote control technology, which is widely used in Switzerland today, the EBL offers faithful operator stations. The relay technology, which has been in use for many decades, is represented by the domino interlocking design (Do 67 - Ypslikon and Do 69 - Pewald). The Ypslikon station is based on original relay technology, which is located in a separate neighboring room, whereas in the course of the new renovation, the Pewald station with its extensions is controlled on a PLC basis

OpenTrack Features
OpenTrack is a planning and simulation tool for railway operations, which has been developed in recent years at the Institute for Traffic Planning and Transport Systems at ETH Zurich. OpenTrack offers support for the following tasks:

Capacity determination of nodes
Capacity determination of routes
Finding capacity bottlenecks
Calculate train follow-up times
Occupation times of station tracks
Optimization of train runs
Determine the effects of interference on the overall network
Planning of construction sites in the network
Visualization of operational processes (vehicles, routes, signals)
Calculate different infrastructure variants

Management of infrastructure data using a graphical user interface

How OpenTrack works
The sequence of a simulation is shown in the figure above. Predefined trains move under the boundary conditions of the schedule data on a defined track topology. The mixed discrete / continuous simulation on the one hand calculates the numerical solution of the differential equation of motion of the vehicles (continuous part), on the other hand the discrete processes in the system (change of interlocking states, delay distributions) are simulated. During the simulation the track topology can be viewed in an animation mode. The moving trains, the prepared routes and the current signal positions are visualized. The simulation can be interrupted at any time so that it can intervene directly in the process and change certain boundary conditions if necessary.

After the simulation run, various evaluations are available:

Stretch / speed charts
track occupation
acceleration behavior
Logs of disabilities and disorders
Image timetables (graphic timetables)
Blocking time stairways
Tractive force curve, power consumption
Target / actual comparison of schedule data

Rockhampton in Queensland Australia is a major railway centre on the main northern line which extends from Brisbane to Cairns.

For many years, a school for signalling operations was located there, using a Maerklin layout.
I have not checked recently, but I have heard it was upgraded in the last 10 years in some measure.

I doubt it has the extent of the example in Zurich.

HO Scale - Märklin (ep III and VI, C Track, digital) - 2 rail (USA and Australia) - 3 rail (English Hornby Dublo) - a few old O gauge.

Teaching model H0 at the Faculty of Transportation Sciences in Zagreb
On February 13, 2019, at the Faculty of Transport Sciences in Zagreb, a solemn presentation of the scale model H0 was made by the railway modeler Robert Šlais in collaboration with several faculty professors. The dimensions of this impressive model are 3 x 7.5 meters and consist of 122 meters of track network, 104 signal signs, 65 switches, 2 LCPs and 4 official positions. It is computer controlled with iTrain software and is fully automated and manually operated. The model has 5 supervisory and management positions, 4 of which are for students and one for professors, and will serve as a tool for teaching students of the railway traffic direction.
Croatian Rail signals are handmade
The rail and trains are Roco

Anyway, of course the DB AG has similar training possibilities. Just for your information:



The last one, EBD (= Eisenbahnbetriebsfeld - gosh please do not ask for a translation, perhaps railroad operational field or railroad operatioal working field?) is unfortunately not available in English. Whereas it is very interesting. EBD is a joint venture of

- Akademischer Arbeitskreis Schienenverkehr e. V. (AKA Bahn),
- DB Training Learning & Consulting und des
- Fachgebiets Bahnsysteme und Bahntechnik der Technischen Universitaet Darmstadt (TU Darmstadt).

I do not want to go into details. But this joint venture EBD works and develops with the DB AG (practical railroad), the Technical University of Darmstadt (theoretical institution) and the AKA Bahn (assocition of students interested in railway systems)


all about and around railways, theoretically and practically.

Of course most is text at this website, even they have a huge MRR layout as well. But a few pictures are published.

This was the second training layout of the Swiss Federal Railways at Löwenberg, but it has been recently dismantled, and a private community is attempting to set it up again somewhere:

Thanks, I know well the EBD I was about to present, but I don't think it's necessary anymore?

In Aachen, in the early 60's, a large scale layout 0 was made to train various occupations on the railway
Later, an electronic scale (ESTW) layout of H0 was made
Last year, the completed new complex (Eisenbahntechnische Lehr- und Versuchsanlage, ELVA) was opened.
