Has anyone used carpet tape to hold down M track instead of using screws? Specifically if laying track on Styrofoam. I'm sure it would work with K track, but I'm not sure about M track with it's limited metal-to-surface contact.

I used it once, on a previous layout (K-track). It was not a success.
It will hold the track in place alright, but the problem is that the tape also captures and holds down all hairs and dust, and over time the glue "softens" and becomes a nasty mess. (The upward surface that is exposed to the air)
The reason why I wanted to use it, was to see if I could use it for ballasting. Unfortunately it was completely inadequate for that! |

Try using acrylic caulking instead. (Small dabs) Plus if you would like to change the layout, it’s easy to remove. Mike |

As said above an acrylic sealer, from Sikaflex. Don't use silicone as it is acidic.

Hi Ron, I created a small winter layout exhibition layout a couple of years ago that had a XPS foam base boards and M track. I used small pieces of cut plywood that were glued with gorilla glue on the foam board that just fitted the cavity under the track bed. I then use the normal m track screws to secure the tacks through the plywood pieces. Still holding tight after 2 years. You can see photo here in post 13 https://www.marklin-user...-An-Alpine-Winter-LayoutBest Regards Lasse |

I learned a lot from it.

The flange along the bottom of M-track base is about 2-3 mm wide and if you attached the tape so that it was flush to, or just inside the outside edge, and overturned on the inside edge, that would prevent any exposed area capturing dust and lint. Could be worth experimenting with? Hope this helps Cookee |
