I just received a bunch of used cars that I found on the internet but I was wondering if some one could help me with this car (see attached pic above) which has electronic components inside and picks up current from the track. I have not a clue what it is used for, can anyone help?

It is not something I am aware of. It does look rather home made, but could have been done to provide sound for a loco.

What happens of you try to run it?

my guess it is a sound unit of some sort. The numbers on the big chip may reveal more but a simple test will probably provide the answer. If nothing happens rip it out and chuck it.

I just received it at my office, I will have to try it out to see. If it is home made it looks pretty good to my humble skills.
Thanks

UPDATED

It looks like a 4411. I would need to see photos of the car from different angles.
Can you post some additional photos, including the car number?

I am trying to remember what the circuit for the 1970's Maerklin sound module looked like.
Item numbers were 7213 (speaker), 7214, 7215 (controller), 7216, 7217

You needed the various items to either manually activate or control it by track location.

Isn’t it a bit of an overkill to just light a red taillight? Or is it more?

There is a speaker (black tube). Did not get a chance to test it yet, too much on my plate this week-end.

You need the appropriate activation device to make the horn sound. See my post above (updated) where I have included new links after the one that I originally posted was blocked.
If you need more info, I can be reached locally at the number for my business, Club Service International

Thanks for the help guys, I decided that it was not worth the trouble to go further with this, I will use the car as is without the electronics.

I bought the lot to practice weathering cars, the price was right. I was just curious.
