So I have added a new storage area to my layout consisting of 11 storage tracks.

I am trying to make it look like a train yard, not a station, and I am wondering what the prototype yards would use for signals to release trains from such a storage yard.

Initially I was not going to add signals at all (because of the enormous expense of signals and controllers) as there is a minimum of 22 signals needed. However,
I have come up with a way of making economical signal controllers as RemoteSign devices and I was thinking of designing and printing a whole bunch of the dwarf Sh signals using my 3D printer.

But then I had the nasty thought that such a yard may have used Hp signals instead which will be more difficult to print. Controlling the signals is the same, just making signals on a pole and getting wires threaded presents additional challenges. It may also look kind of strange having 2 rows of 11 signals on masts in a yard.

So does anyone know how the prototype does this. If there is a large set of parallel tracks in a storage yard, does each track have a Sh or an Hp signal at each end? (or both!)

In my case, once a train leaves a siding it goes off on its way and will join the mainline. i.e. trains will not be leaving the siding on a shunting maneuver, rather it will be setting off for some destination beyond the limits of the yard.

Now I could extend the yard limits to where I have an Hp signal before the trains get onto the mainline. This would mean that the trains can leave the sidings as a shunting movement and then get an Hp1 signal to carry on. Is that legitimate?

Please find below a plan of the Düsseldorf storage yard: “Gruppen-Ausfahrt-Signal” with “Sperr-Signal”.

Wonderful thanks, that looks like exactly the type of configuration I hoped they may use....

Somehow I imagined you would be the one who would come up with the appropriate picture.. how do you find these images?

Hi Dale
Depending on the era, in Germany the signals would be
- luminous Dwarf signals (double red double white) for era III and later
Lichtspersignal 4018.png
- mechanical "Blende" luminous signal for era III and before
BlendeSignal.png

In France, they have only one "signal de manœuvre" (Switching Signal) for a group of adjacent tracks and a luminous indicator of the Track number for which the track is open.
I would be surprised if then don't do similarly in Germany.
In modern Digital operation you don't need interrupting the power so it simplifies things

Cheers
Jean

yes Jean, as I said I am planning on making the dwarf version.
I will be switching them over wifi from my control software. No track power involved at all!
