I just received two new curved points and installed them. Locos were often not making it through the inner branch in one direction due to loss of power on one point. After the ritual temper tantrum I got down and had a very close look and found that four studs in a group had a tiny sliver of plastic sticking up from the track bed on one side. I don't know how C track is made but it looks like there has been a slight misalignment during assembly or failure to form the hole in the plastic track bed in the first place. Yes, I should have taken a picture before I fixed it.

These very tiny slivers of plastic were still enough to stop the pickup shoe on the locos from making contact in the direction that pushed the sliver up against the stud. In the opposite direction it seems they were being pushed clear. Once removed with a sharp blade that problem has disappeared. However, there is an annoying click from the pick up shoes as locos run through the point - louder than the 5 other curved points in my little layout. I'll have to check out the stud heights next I guess ...

Isn't Marklin just supposed to come out of the box and work?

In theory yes, but in practice no, not every time.

I have almost all Märklin and mostly HO, although I do have a small number of Z gauge trains!
I have models from Era I to Era VI, but I try to focus on Eras I & III. Whoops, that one got away from me. Let's just say I focus on cool trains, regardless of the particulars :-)
So many trains and so little time.
