Good afternoon everybody, sun and warmth in Suffolk UK at last.
I have seen a 3148 train set coming up in an auction house close to me.
This set was a new entry in the 1960 catalogue.

Two things I would like to know:
1) do you know which digital retrofitting kit I would need to convert the 3048 loco of the set ?
2) It is missing one of the bogie side plates, part number 20392. I have downloaded the exploded part list and they use an old numbering scheme. I don't know if they have made a newer / revisited exploded diagram so that I can match the piece numbers on the eshop with what is on the diagram. Who knows which is the 'new' number ?

The set seems in good conditions but I'll have to go and have a closer look before the auction though.
The coaches are tin plate which I do not mind as it takes me back to my early Marklin train of 1976.

Thank you
Marco

3048 had a LFCM motor so the motor kit you will need is 60944 - http://www.bahn.hfkern.de/Maerklin/Menue.html is where you can find that info out.

When Marklin converted from 5 digit part numbers to 6 digit part numbers they simply added a zero to all the existing part numbers. 20392 therefore became 203920. Later Marklin added an 'E' in front of the numbers, so you are looking for E203920.

20392/203920 seems to be the entire tender chassis

so I should get this piece from ebay even though I might not win the auction? At the end of the day it is 10 euros :-)

yes, but note that it is a "buy it now" item and he has four available.

Don't forget that ebay will add 20% VAT onto that automatically as it is coming from Europe.

[edit]
Oh hang on - if you translate the page it says "No Shipping to Great Britain".

So you will need a friendly face in Europe to receive it for you and forward it on. you will still cop 20% at the border even if they post it as a gift, so keep any proof of purchase.

Whoa there sea biscuit!

The 3048 has a LFCM motor but the 60944 kit will not fit.

What you will need is this https://www.ebay.de/itm/...a2603:g:1C0AAOSwCY5dHyh1

Sorry, I was speaking American 😉

Was just trying to help guide to the correct parts for the loco. Hope I didn’t cause offence.

I was wondering the same thing re converting a 3048 and stumbled across this excellent step by step guide by : https://www.marklin-user...-3048-Digital-Conversion by one of the experts (Costas) on this forum.

UPDATE. I won the 3184 set for 80 GBP. I already opened it up, cleaned the insides and boy o boy was it full of muck.
The gears all turn perfectly, I removed the rotor to clean it, the motor shield and the holes of the brushes with a pipe cleaner.
Checked all wiring before reassembling and powering up. The motor works perfectly in analogue, the direction change relais is of the first type, I guess, as it doesn't look like the one posted in the link posted by SvenM, #11

The loco does not have traction tyres and I'm ordering them. Do you confirm 7152 ?
I'm going to order the motor kit to convert it to DCC.
I need a new pick up shoe. Do you confirm that it is 7174 ?
Where could I find the screw that holds the pick up shoe? The code I have is 75602

The box is a bit knackered but it has a complete set of M tracks that have never been used. I use C track but while waiting for the pieces to arrive I can let the loco and the coaches run around :-)

I have only a problem with the engine rods, one is bent in two places and I'll have to find a way to fix it.parts, I was thinking on duplicating it with a cast of some sort.

Lets see how it goes.

Hi Marco, these sheets may help, they are the original part numbers from this 1964 issue but a quick search usually gives the modern replacement

3048_p1_0464.jpg

3048_p2_0464.jpg

3048_p3_0464.jpg

3048_p4_0464.jpg

And the parts listing covering the 3048 from the 0733 Service Manual

marklinservice-parts-p43.jpg

Hope it helps

Marco, do you have any pictures of your set?

Here's one of my 3148 set

20181006_150800.jpg

I've since replaced the blue first class coach (not part of the original 3148 set as advertised) with the proper green 2nd class coach.

Hi Bigdaddy, thank you for the booklet, very interesting.

My set is from 1963 as can be found at post #36, https://www.marklin-user...overhaul--with-pictures, by 'intruder' where he says:

If your tender is marked 3026 it was made in 1960 or 1961, if the tender is marked 3048 it was made in 1962 or 1963.

- From 1964 the locomotive had vertical rods next to the front lamps, otherwise like the 62/63-version.
- From 1965 the text on the locomotive and on the tender was printed.
- In 1972 the front bogie wheels got nine spokes and no more Märklin logo on the cylinders.
1972 was the last year of production.

My 3148 set is as old as me :-)
Tender marked 3048 and this puts it at 1962/63 - Tender is not metal, it is some sort of plastic which I think is bakelite
In front of the front lamps I have metal arches which puts it at 1962/63
The box is 1/4 missing the artwork
The cooaches are all green with the speisewagen in maroon (like yours)

I will post pictures as soon as I take them.
The set is assembled on the floor and working perfectly. I haven't used the smoke generator yet
It surely is a pleasure to have something analog again that works flawlesly.

out of curiosity, running the loco without traction tyres could damage the wheel's slots or not ?

Yes, you can damage the tire grooves by running without tires. The outer lip will get rounded off to the point where the tires will no longer stay on.
I love the smell of smoke fluid in the morning .

I ordered the replacement bogey sunday from Germany and it arrived today, no extra duties to pay.

I tried to unscrew the screw holding the present one in place but it doesn't budge. I sprayed some WD-40 on it and hope it will losen up.

Have you folks got any suggestions on how to unscrew it?

Thank you
Marco
