I had to double check a few times...a 3029 with one traction tyre...

What have I got? Was it a discount version of 3029 or a mistake?

Hello,

It will depend of the verison. Some comes with one traction tire and other comes with two. Version 3 I think, the one I have comes with one traction tire. 3029 is a really simple model.

Regards

Hi
I believe Märklin probably corrected a possible mistake (I am not sure Märklin did produce this loco with 2 tires) by not letting a 2 axle loco have 2 traction tires.
The reason is simple: in absence of suspended axles, even the smallest bending of a track will cause the current to be picked by only one wheel.
If this wheel is on a contact track, the loco will stop and even in absence of contact track the current pick-up will be poor.
On all the Märklin locos I have (over 100) not a single one with 2 axles has 2 tires

Note: for obvious adherence reasons the wheel with a tire has a slightly larger diameter that the adjacent wheel without it. If it was the opposite, the pulling power would be disastrous
Cheers
Jean

Jean,

My 3029s all have three axles or have I got the number wrong? Some with two tyres and this one with one.

I understand what you mean about contact

I am sorry, you are right Märklin 3029 is the 3 axles loco. I mixed it with the 2 axle version Märklin Antex 3029
Here is a picture of it

Jean,

All is clear! I have decided to have a go at making all my small cheap locos work well, so far so good but some tend to get stuck on the more complicated bits of track if going slowly. I have M track much of which is not in perfect shape!

Because some short locos current pick-up is poor, I managed to add discreet skis with a thin base screwed under the slider (no modification of the Märklin vehicle to avoid damaging its value). Each of the tiny skis are 2mm wide, 4 mm long and round in shape (like a small wheel) and they push slightly on the rail with a small vertical play. Ideally the frame of the 2 skis is made of bronze thin foil.
Cheers

I will look to see if I have the materials for this. I have some very thing brass sheet I have used for shims. It might do the job but is quite soft.

Wasn't the 3029 like loco with two axles a stripped down version available in a few start sets. I don't recall this being available as a standalone item.

@Jean what is Maerklin Antex?

I remember when I was in Switzerland in 1971 and had no track, I got a 3050 for my birthday and a Start Set with a 3029 (3 axles) from Franz Carl Weber for Christmas just to have some track.
AFAIR it came with an oval of 5130 industrial gauge track, one straight and one contact track. The set saw a lot of use as my brothers also wanted to run their trains too (3071, Hag 190, etc). One trip to Jelmoli and FCW, we picked up some catenary so that it was more like the real thing... So cool.
Interesting tidbit. The 3029 was about 20% faster than the 3050, but had much less tractive power.

3029 moves like a startled rat, the game will be in training it!

As an aside a newer 3000 (one with a serial number) is much slower than older ones and the fastest of the lot is the one with a reversing lever and double click reverse.

However I am not looking for speed.

@Mike:
Märklin Antex was a brand created by Märklin to sell in the Netherlands from 1964 to 1968, simplified starter kits at a very affordable price without getting a "rebellion" from regular train resellers.
Cheers
