And Dr Tom (like all the Tom's around here) is very helpful and will respond to any questions asked. If you are into all things Marklin Digital, the newsletter is worth getting, as you can find tips and tricks there you may not have otherwise known. I did not renew my subscription to this letter. I found that it deals almost entirely with the CS2, which I guess makes some sense, but does me no good since I run my trains with a computer through an IB. |

True, last few issues have dealt extensively with the CS2 and MS2. He also is responsive and recently had a review of the iTrain software. It's cheap, and it's in English. r/Thomas |

Hi all,
Does anyone have the CD mentioned in this thread? I am attempting to find a copy of an article that was in Volume 6 No. 4 (July-Aug 1994) covering the conversion of primex 3017 and 3185 models to digital.
I have been attempting to get a 3185 that I bought from the Warwick & Warwick auction running, and there is just no life in it. I am suspicious the decoder may be dead. It was supposed to have been 'professionally fitted' by the dealer in Towcester, but I don't know that he did a terribly good job.
The motor is free, and I have put a tiny drop of oil in it. I can rotate the armature by turning the wheels with my thumbs, so believe it is mechanically happy, but would really like to get a beeter feel for how the conversion has been done.
Part of the problem is that there is a small PCB with a handful of components on it, which appears to have been an original fitting to drive the LED headlights. I haven't worked out just how this is supposed to deal with things yet, but assume it is an original Marklin item as there are no makers markings on it, but it does look like a professional item.

And my 3185 is in an unopened Primex box, so I can't look at it for you, either!

Thanks to Jos I now have the article I was looking for.
The article describes how Primex 3017 S-Bahn and 3185 Zugspitzbahn railcars have LED head and tail lights which have one connection permanently connected to chassis, which requires a little adapter board to connect to the digital decoder. Tom Catheralls article gives the circuit diagram, and how to manufacture it if needed, to convert these railcars to digital.
Took me a bit of an internet search to find the information, and I found it listed in a surprising place, a patent lodged by Katzer - he of fighting the JMRI software project over claims of patent infringement. Why he listed it in the patent I don't know, as it didn't have anything to do with the patent that came up, but it gave me the pointer to the article.

Alex Catch ...  Berlin Railbus Dig Conv.pdf (34kb) downloaded 116 time(s).You may find that the little circuit board with the pair of transistors etc on it is already fitted, so you don't need to manufacture it.
