I have had this set and the associated entertainment wagon for six years, but I don't have a locomotive for it.

Here is a picture of the set from the Eurorail hobbies site (see https://www.eurorailhobb...;sc=HO&stock=43867):

The blurb from the Marklin site tells us that the wagons are as they were in (northern) Summer 1985.

Any suggestions for a matching loco?

I would have thought a br216 in blue/cream would be a starter, such as a digitised one of these

What does the train destination board show?
My first guess was a BR 218.
I assume the BR 216 cannot provide heating for those coaches, so it is only an option for the summer.
BR 111, 110, or 141 are other options - unless the destination boards are for a non-electrified route.
BR 151 could be an exotic alternative. Wink

And what about a V200 - br221 which has also been painted in "ozeanblau-beige" ?

Best regards

Hi AdrianSmile ,

I note your set is Märklin # 43867. The set features two Bm 234 compartment cars and one Am 203 compartment car. It also seems it was a “one time issue” for 2015/2016.

My 2015/2016 cattledog shows an Am 203 available as Märklin # 43923 on page 170 and a Bm 234 available as Märklin # 43924 in the image below of page 171. Your set 43867 is on page 168.

The consist details at the bottom of page 171 include both 43924 & 43923 and seem to suggest that the consist is pulled by a Märklin # 37013 (BR 110.3, a “pants crease” 110 in beige/ocean blue). This loco featured in the 2014/2015 programme. (? can you believe Märklin that this is the appropriate loco?)OhMyGod

The ever-truthful WikipediaWink comments re BR 110.3 :

Production of class E 10.

The five prototypes of class E 10.0 were taken out of service between 1975 and 1978. Of these E 10 003 and E 10 005 were preserved as museum locomotives.
The first serial units went into service in 1956 and started with number E 10 101 (class E 10.1). As opposed to class E 40 these units were equipped with a rheostatic/regenerative brake, which also accounted for the difference in the roof design between the two classes. Starting in December 1956 a total of 379 locomotives in several series were delivered by the manufacturers (Krupp, Henschel, Krauss-Maffei (mechanical parts); Siemens, AEG, BBC (electrical parts). Starting with E 10 288 the new body used with E 10.12 (see below), the so-called "crease" (Bügelfalte) type, was also applied to all regular E 10 machines. Thereafter these locomotives were sometimes designated as class E 10.3.

BR 220 was out of service by 1984, BR 221 was no longer used for international passenger trains because it only provided steam heating and was mainly used for freight trains.
So IMHO some locos in red, blue, or green are better matches than V 90 or V 200 with the same colour scheme.

BR 290 is a slow shunter that cannot provide any heating to the train. The 212 is rather slow and also only provides steam heating.

For a special trip ("Sonderfahrt") almost any loco can be used, even without heating. Köf II, Köf III, V 60, ...

The 212 was used for commuter trains and regional . Marklin catalogues the passenger cars as companions to it with the 39212. The light functions can turn if the front or rear seperatly if a cab control car is in use.
As the br 111 reached more built numbers, and routes once non electrified were, the 212 was used more as a harbor and yard switcher then a road switcher.
What one chooses to model depends on the era.. Myself, I mix.

Thank you for all the responses..

My initial assumption was that this was like an ICE/Rheingold/ECC etc and the whole train was colour co-ordinated.. Now that it has been clarified to be a "Special Trip" train, then the options seem almost only limited to trains that were actually in service at the time.

So much choice..

And I learned something new today.. I did not realise that the locomotive provided the heating for the passenger wagons. I come from a place where, in 1984, nothing was heated - even in winter.. In summer the windows are open and in winter they are closed (in the morning anyway). One of those things about living in a place where the mid-day temperature only gets to 15C about 4 days in a year. Blushing.

And thanks to Philip, I see that there is also a baggage car (43960).. I will potter off and see if I can still get one of those before I look for a nice loco..

In my youth, we referred to these "UIC-X-Wagen" or "m-Wagen" colloquially as "D-Zug-Wagen"; D-Zug = Durchgangszug (= express train). They could be found in any train "above" commuter service. The livery was introduced in the 1970s, and I remember them in D-Zug (= express train) and Eilzug (= fast-stopping train or semi-fast train) service, on my former stomping grounds - the back then non-electrified parts of the North German plains - mainly hauled by 218 diesels.

EDIT: The diesels wore either the old red or the modern blue-beige livery (double-traction could have mixed liveries, too), and the cars were mixed with old blue (1st class) and green (second class coaches). Diners, which were very rare, continued to be in red livery.

And even better: in 1985 DB celebrated 150 years of railways in Germany. So this gives a good reason to use any museum loco with that train.

This is a coach set from the Zuggeschichten (train histories) series. Does it include a leaflet with some background information?

I will find the box later today and let you know.. I don't recall anything special about the contents, but it has been a few years since I opened the box. The Disco wagon only has the people and an instruction sheet about the SD-card..
