Yes, I am not certain how long the original design was used, but here is an image of the two styles. Doesn’t seem that little bevel would make that much difference.

I have a few with the original design, but hesitant to try to modify them.

Maybe since they are very old, they seem a bit brittle. I am not certain the nylon type plastic was used early on. To start cutting with a sharp instrument, I would probably cut myself or break the whole coupler off. I might as well replace the entire thing right off and keep my digits.

I would have thought that reason given for having the bevel could make quite a difference if there are regular derailments.
