I searched the forum (and the internet) for this, but not finding anything, I hope some of you can help.

I live in the US, but collect mainly German and Swiss prototype locos from Marklin. A few years ago, I saw the New York Central PA-1 at a swap-meet, and decided I needed to have at least one US train.

My engine runs well, but I want to open it up to do some maintenance, and I cannot figure out where the access screw(s) is/are. I removed several small screws from the bottom at the front and back, but they only seem to hold the trucks or some other small item in place. Does anyone know the secret? I thought that maybe there was a cover on the roof that could be removed to expose the screw, but the shell seems like one solid piece of metal.

Any hints or photos greatly appreciated.

Ken

If you search the top of the locomotive you will find a little plastic cup, count 8 cm from the end of the locomotive. If you move this plastic part with a toothpick you can remove it and you will find the only screw you are will looking for.

I was able to get the shell off my PA1 thanks to the help here. I guess I have the oldest possible version of the PA1 because it looks to have an FX decoder, rather than MFX. It has sound, but the decoder has dip switches, and also small potentiometers for setting the max speed, and adjusting the momentum. It looks like the 6090x decoders. There is also a potentiometer on the 2nd board which I assume is a volume control for the sound board. If anyone knows which specific decoder is in here, I would appreciate knowing. I am having trouble setting the maximum speed, so I think the screws are in a different order than the 6090 which I am used to.
