For the past few months - on and off Blushing, I have been working on setting up a virtual meeting place.

It is based on a product named Jitsi (see https://jitsi.org). The main reason for using this product rather than the established Zoom, Teams etc products is that this product allows me to set up my own hosting server. Benefits of this approach include:
  • the content is protected from prying eyes,

  • you can restrict access to the meeting (although we will be using basic security for this first meeting),

  • you can adjust the video quality and reduce the network traffic for people with poor Internet speeds,

  • you are not giving away your information to a third party who on-sells it (see the media reports about Zoom)
and
  • it is "free"..

Live testing last weekend with three people revealed only one problem - My headphones would not work on my laptop while I was using Jitsi - I could hear YouTube content and Windows sounds, but not the voices on Jitsi.. Speakers worked fine, but my old ears prefer headphones.. This should be sorted this weekend..

All we need to do is set a date and time for the catch up. You may bring any beverage and food as you will not need to drive home.

If this meeting works well, we can look at expanding it to include Interstate and overseas guests. However, I suspect that the latency (time it takes a packet to travel through the network is limited by the speed of light and the various spy agencies that the network travels through to get to an overseas destination) issues will make it difficult for this to work any further than NZ - but we can try..

Hi

As this is a virtual meeting, is it reserved for Aussies only,

Ah, that connects to their Cloud-based service - similar to Teams and Zoom... You will connect to a private server - Is there any provision in the app to select a privately hosted server?

Initially, until we understand how well it works. In the long term, if latency is a big problem, there is an option for technically savvy forum members to host regional servers.. I am more than happy to send details on how to set it up, BUT you really need a good commercial firewall to protect your network if you are going to expose it to the world.. ( at the moment, some naughty countries are unable to access the Jitsi server- China, Russia, Iran, USA and some others..)

Hi Adrian,
You just enter the room name or URL of the room you want to join.
You may make up a name, just let the people to the meeting know it so they can enter the same name.
Similar to zoom.

Is this some sort of official meeting with an agenda etc?

I think for general discussion an online meeting may not work too well, since unlike IRL you can't branch off into individual conversations to talk trains, it would be a free for all.

If someone wants to run an "official" Brisbane meet, complete with minutes and agendas, I am happy to provide that facility. I personally have no desire to belong to a formal club with all the ho-ha and controlling personality types that go with it.. I can see that the East Islanders have make it work well with their Marklin Club, but I am not confident that it will work here..

I did think of having a "show and tell" style meeting.. For example, how to do events in a CS3.. The software does allow for people to "put up their hand" to speak and the moderator of the session (not always me) can allow people to speak..

The sky is the limit.. I am open to suggestions..

And there are times I would rather be steel-head fishing. That's is a sea run rainbow trout) fish, fishing on the south Oregon coast in in the pouring rain. Oh, no that wasn't rain, it was really liquid sunshine.
