Hello To all,
I may be in the position to purchase some 300 series coaches. I have long thought about putting together a train of this vintage.
My question is;

The truck/bogie assemblies appear to have cast side frames.
Are they prone to getting Zincpest?
If the wheels rot out, will later style wheels fit in the old style frames?
Are there newer replacement truck/bogie assys. available?

The rest of the cars seem ok, all the parts are there and the bodies are straight. I don't think they were repainted. They show their age and have lots of scratches but I think the asking price of $40.00 per coach reflects this . I have dealt with the seller before with good results.

Any Thoughts?

Hi Mikey

Yes they are prone to zincpest. Some companies make replicas and I cast my own too. Some newer wheels will fit, but you want the blunt flat axles.

I wrote an article for 35X series cars but the same applies to 34X series car bogies too:

Best,

Paul

Hi,

I redid the trucks and wheels on 341 to 344. Some had pressed metal trucks which were fine. The cast trucks just snapped in two and some of the wheelsets were cracked. I got the replacement trucks and wheelsets from Paul and Ritter in Germany.

Thanks for all the info. Very interesting. I think I'm going to hold off buying older coaches until I come across the type which have the pressed metal trucks.
Did the pressed metal style come before or after the cast ones?

Hi,

I think in general the pressed trucks were earlier. My wagons are possibly 42-46, as estimated by Paul from the boxes. Two have steel trucks and two cast. That was an era of mix and match for Marklin.
