Granite Gorge and Northern.pdf (177kb) downloaded 92 time(s).

I don't know how to make this open automatically so you'll have to download it I guess. I saw this layout in an ETE Express presentation and remembered it from when I was a young teenager. It was in an Atlas Tool Company magazine "Six Layouts for Custom-Line Track". I still have the book. I decided to have a go at converting to C-track using Scarm. Atlas and C-Track geometry doesn't match up due to different angles on turnouts and crossovers but I think it came out pretty well. The double track is on bridges above the yard tracks below.

Regards,
Roger

Thanks AK,
The addition of a pair of left hand R3 curved switches in the upper right hand corner double track would improve operation by allowing out and back running from the yard.
Nice thing with M is no special wiring needed!

The track plan does not hold any return-loops, and as such does not need any special wiring in 2-rail either.

Agreed Henrik, but if you add the cross over I spoke of it creates a return loop. Operationally more interesting.

The Granite Gorge is probably my all-time favorite HO track plan. Matter of fact, at the age of 13 I built a DC HO layout following the step by step plans and instructions provided by Atlas. I have often thought that the track plan would make a great Marklin layout too. So, thank you for converting the plan! Question: How closely does the Marklin plan mirror the Atlas plan? I’m asking because the framing that Atlas engineered might have to be re-engineered to accommodate an altered track plan.

Hi CWP,
The plan is close but not exact. This would be an issue around the bridges. Using standard open benchwork or Linn Westcott's L girder system it shouldn't be much of an issue. Just use risers instead of the blocking system the Atlas plan uses.
