Moving away from the doom and gloom of the present dificulties with Marklin, I was cheering myself up by looking at what I had bought in 2008. These are the locos that I got:

New:
37187-1 DB Br18.4
36792 OBB 2016 "Hercules"
36421 DR Br132 "Ludmilla"
PIKO VLB Desiro set
PIKO Dispolok Taurus

Used:
3001 DB E63 (left analogue)
3021 DB Br220 (came with a 6080 decoder fitted)
3084 DB Br050 (converted to digital with 60760 set)
3312 KWStE T5 (converted to digital with 60760 set)
34112 DRG Br18.1 (delta)
3428 DB Br515 (delta)
34561 DRG E60 (delta)
3604 DB Br80 (6080 digital)
28501 RAG works train set (delta)
Primex 2702 Br144 tanker train (left analogue)
DBAG Br 185 from starter set (detailed roof with parts kit)

I remember that at the beginning of the year I promised myself that I would buy no more than 12 locos, one a month maximum.biggrin I guess 4 over is not too bad!

How about you guys, what locos did you get in 2008?

I only picked up two last year, but I'm very pleased with both:

36240 Br 24
39020 Br 18.3 biggrin

I had my eye on a 37031, the P8 on KPEV colors, and I'd still like one, but the new Rheingold set ate up the rest of the available money. I'm a 'self-employed' musician as well, but since I'm a trumpet player, I'll do just about anything for money! [:o)]

I did ok! I got the following:

New Items:
Cisalpino set
Red Re 4/4I

Used:
33865 Red Arrow with Ski Trailer
A lot of coaches and wagons

I get the feeling I'm missing one I'll have to look. I also sold a few so my loc count is about even. I'm finding that I have almost everything I need so limiting myself to Swiss bits and some american has thankfully limited my expenditures

Hi Pål
Thanks for comment about 37774.

Well I sympathize with all on the jobs situation.
It is very precarious times for all of us.

My father grew up during the Great Depression (1929-24) and the most precious thing in life for him, was a JOB.

Pietro,

this old thread of mine showed some pictures of my first experiments:

https://www.marklin-user...ault.aspx?g=posts&t=6898

The easiest ones to convert are the articulated locomotives by Rivarossi (E 646, E 656). The middle carriage is perfect for this since it is not motorized. Just install a pick-shoe and connect it to the catenary pick-up of the locomotive and switch to that power source. If you want, you can combine the two rail into the ground outlet. Very easy!

Thank you Mario!

I think I'll try with an E646 by Rivarossi as a first try... since it's cheap and as you tell it seems easy. I'll ask you if I have questions!
But I am attracted by E428 as you did in your thread... and in the future by E432 that is a new for 2009!

Thank you Mario!

I think I'll try with an E646 by Rivarossi as a first try... since it's cheap and as you tell it seems easy. I'll ask you if I have questions!
But I am attracted by E428 as you did in your thread... and in the future by E432 that is a new for 2009!

Pietro

Pietro,

you will have to problem with the E646 nor with any that has the third bogie in the center unpowered. The installation does not require any modification, just re-soldering of a few wires. I personally solder the pick-up shoe to the overhead connection since I will not run power through the catenary.

For E428 (like E626 and the newer one that you want, E432) one needs to use the unpowered first bogie. This is a bit more tricky and will probably require milling and modifying plastic parts. I had no trobles with the 428 while I did work a bit too much on the 626 and as a consequence had to glue parts together at the end. I have since bought a new version of the same Roco locomotive and will moodify it much more nicely

For the diesels or locomotives with two bogies, both powered (such as the Roco D345 or Rivarossi D341) I have not found a nice solution that allows the pick-up shoe and keep both bogies powered. For the D345 I have opted to put the shoe in the first car following the loco and then connect it through wire. I will next connect it through current counducting coupling.

For the complete trains it's a case by case scenario. I have modified the Rivarossi 2024 ALn668 diesel coach and is fine. I also have received just now the Rivarossi 2030 ETR 242 and will see how to do that. The bogies seem all to be able to receive a pick-up shoe so it should not be a problem. The Oskar Aln 772 will probably get a pick-up shoe on the idle car. The main problem with these is the connection of the head and tail lights since in DC operation they just have to reverse voltage to change lights. In our world we have to connect the lights to the decoder and this means running a wire from it. So if the decoder is on the powered coach then we will have to either keep the train always connected and run a wire or make a number of connections in between cars. Since I want also to add lights to these models I will be looking to retro-fit a multiple pole connector (such as the Veissmann 5071)

All in all, considering that Marklin does not (and will not for the foreseable future) manufacture new italian locomotives and trains, I believe that modifying Rivarossi, Acme, Vitrains, Rodo and Oskar will be the way to go.

I got a few new (and some older) locos this year.

The ones I'm most pleased with are the
HAG Ae 6/6 in "Cargo" colors
Marklin Edelweis loco
and a old 3102 Borsig, which someday will get upgraded. I got a really good buy on this one at ebay, almost a steal.
