Hi,
Im totally new to Marklin and model trains in general. I followed a Youtube video by Marklinofsweden to clean the electrical contacts on a 3014 loco.
I cleaned the commutator and wheels and it all went back together fine.
Now it wont run and the lights dont come on.
When I turn up the speed on my transformer, there is a loud buzz.
I've visually checked for broken wires and short circuits, but I cant see anything obvious.
I've tried reading the Service Manual, but it's not helping me much. I guess the buzz is coming from the reverse selector magnet/solenoid (dont know what the real name is).
Any help is appreciated.

maybe the spring of the reversing unit has fallen down.

Hi Jonahfro, are you able to add a photo or two of the Loco with body removed?
I agree that a missing reverse unit Spring is possible.
Does the motor armature turn freely, best to check this by applying a little finger pressure to the gears between the armature and the wheels.

First thing. Most of the 3014 models had a three way direction relay, which had forward - neutral - backwards In the middle position, normally all 6 lights would be on and then change to 3 front 1 rear when the reverse pulse was activated again.
You can activate the reverse unit manually by flipping the little switch on the side. If the model is open, you can also do it by pushing on the reverse unit itself. When pushed, it should turn the gear, which changes it from one cycle to the next.
You should also check to make sure that the model is properly set to receive voltage from the catenary or the track.
The way that the leads for the lightbulbs are designed, you should also make sure that they are properly contacting the bulbs and not shorting out.

Hi JonahFro Welcome to the forum The key things to check are: - the power switch (catenary/ track) Most probable - the brushes: are they back in place with springs installed? Less likely because lamps would be on - the slider: is it installed and adjusted? Cheers Jean |

Hi, Have you tried running the loco with out the shell? Some times the contact of the lights will produce a short, not letting the loco to run. In all these all machines you need to insert the bulbs after you put the shell. Regards

Thanks for all the replies. i'll try and answer them all here: 1: If I turn the power switch on the transformer left, the reversing mechanism activates. 2: The reverse selector spring is fitted and working. 3: I can turn the drive wheels, and I can see the motor armature spinning. 4: The switch is set to track power. 5: I tried running without the shell, but get the same result. 6: I think the bushes are fitted ok. The copper wire one is dirty on one end, but I think its in the right way. 7: I assume the small fluff above the motor spindle, between the brushes is an oiling wick? Photos below - Anything obvious?

Hi your invertor relay seems to be approx 1960 (Telex relay type not normally on this model) and its spring looks damaged. The probable result is it triggers even at low voltage and the "bocksprung" contact (top of relay) shut the motor and lights The best is to change the spring for a new one. Otherwise you cut away a few elongated coils of the spring (5 turns or so) and re-attach it and it solves the issue until you have received spare springs Cheers Jean |

OK thanks I'll look into it. Where can I buy spares? I did notice that the contact on top of the relay was slightly bent. Probably from where I cleaned it. I straightened it out and the train now runs fine and the reverse mechanism also works. Thanks for everyone's help.
