Has anyone watched the Marklin Christmas video yet? At least this year it has English subtitles when watched from the English pages.

Scroll well down to find the video.

Middle part is just a bit too weird for me....and "In the Hall of the Mountain King" has had a more Hallowe'en remembrance for me...but, it is different...Huh

Heck -thought for a moment that Jeremy Corbyn had found a new job!. Actually found the thing a bit weird and didn't like it, don't think it will sell many train sets.

Yeah, me too, maybe there is something in the German mindset that it appeals to. Perhaps some of our German friends on here could comment on this aspect.

It's lost on many of our German friends also - it came up on FAM several days ago and most comments are critical, but some like it.

https://www.altemodellba...geht-es-wohl-nimmer.html (use Chrome or Edge for on the fly translation)

It seems the main 'disconnect' (for lack of a better term) is the target audience. Bear in mind that Märklin will have engaged their advertising agency to produce this and those creative minds have clearly come up with a concept that is tailored to capture their audience in a slightly unusual manner. I think the pouring of the petrol scene drags on a bit but that's just being nit-picky!! Laugh

When I first watched it, the concept was lost on me too, but now seeing it with the sub-titles I get the point. It's just unfortunate that they could not do an actual English voice-over instead of the somewhat distracting captions.

Here's the direct video URL, took me a while to actually find it from the link

Hello Alan,

this video has a German text with special form of alliteration rimes. Not translateable. The English subtitels has really to be weird. In the German version it is an sometimes used advertising tool. Finally it is a special form of marketing and so do I see it. Märklin wants to sell its products and the most intersting point is the price reducing voucher. Makes the starter sets really cheaper and for many people very attractiv. Especially, if a dealer is willing to combine it with its own dealer discount too. I had this experience with my Insider bonus voucher for the Big Boy. Had to ask several dealers before I got the dealer discount AND the 70 € from the Maerklin voucher together. Most offered either inhouse price or Maerklin voucher only. This should people keep in mind using this Christmas bonus.

Regards

TEEWolf

Hi
Initially I did not post a reply because IMO the video is a failure to make train lovers like us dream about christmas
Just browse at past Märklin ads. This was totally different I think

I think the cult status of "Dinner for One" does a lot to explain German humour.

I think the 2020 Märklin Christmas commercial is fine. Probably more directed at grown ups than at children.

Huh? -I have almost grown up with that sketch being aired every new-years eve, in Denmark.
It seemed so BRITISH to me, that I never doubted that we (danes) were adopting -yet another- british habit. Googling it now, I see that it was not famous there ever.
Still, I dont see how this explains German humor, though... unless it is to say that they have almost NONE themselves, and adopts whatever foreign funnies they can get their hands on... ;-)

I just watched it for the first time, brought tears to my eyes! Reminds me of some of the W.C. Fields skits as Mr. Souse (he pronounced it as Sousay). There was one in particular where he was trying to put on socks, I was just about on the floor.
