Hello community, I retired a while ago and I'm thinking of giving a new life to the old locs I used to play with when I was a child. New motor, digital,... But how do I start? is there a list that shows what I need in relation to the loc number? here they are: IMG_20201028_132602 (002) by Dirky dyniMo, on Flickr thanks for any info/hints/tips! Dirk

LokPilot Decoders from ESU and the permanent magnets to convert the AC motors to DC will cover you well.
There are about 3 different shaped magnets for the three major types of Mäklin motors likely to be in those locomotives.
I would avoid putting sound decoders into all of them, one at the most, as they sound gets tiresome after a while and more than one running at a time, even more so.
Others will insist you also replace the armatures to make them 5 pole motors but I think that is unnecessary as the converted DC motor is controlled very well by LokPilot decoders. The Lokpilots will also work with Mäklin digital controllers and other DCC controllers. They need not be the latest generation either.
Your dealer can probably advise one what magnets are needed for each, or even the ESU web site.
I would start with one and see how well it goes for you, and if it works well, do the rest. |

Completely agree with Dale. I have had good luck with a basic ESU decoder and Permanent Magnet. I too am a bit selective in how many locomotives get sound. Saves money and I agree it can be come overkill some times. But it I guess it just depends on your preference and bank account.

None of these locs will get sound. The only sound I want is the sound I remember from 50 years ago. Locs rolling over metal M-track on a wooden frame... :-) 1970 Vake Jan Luc by Dirky dyniMo, on Flickr This is my father with my two younger brothers more than 50 years ago. :-)

Don't throw away any of the old analogue reversing units if you are converting them, particularly any that might have Telex!

Locs rolling over metal M-track on a wooden frame... :-) If you want to go with Marklin decoders, you have the option of the 60906 decoder and you can keep the motors. ore you can use a 60972 decoder and the proper motor conversion sett, but you need to find out what type of motor your locomotives have DCM, SFCM ore LFCM etc and sometimes you must open the locomotives to be sure. 60760 might be an option where the motor conversion parts fit. you can also try this page: https://wiki.3rail.nl/index.php?title=Categorie:M%C3%A4rklin_Motoren eg, the LFCM motor page have a conversion table that might be useful.

Dirk, A 60760 may be enough for you but as a guideline they are not the best when it comes to smooth running especially at low speed and the same goes with a perm. magnet from ESU, if you want smooth running characteristics get the full conversion version (60941, 60943, 60944 or E188838 https://www.ebay.de/itm/...3f145:g:n0QAAOSwhJFb3YcdBestehend aus: 1 x Motorschild 1 x 5-poliger Anker mit 7 Zähnen (E214118) 1 x Feldmagnet (E210882) 1 x Lötfahne (E212230) 1 x Schraube (E784810) 1 x Schraube (E751500) 1 x Bürstenpaar eckig (E601460) your small steam engine includingBR 23, BR 24 and small electric loco 3001 need a 60943 your Pacific loco (BR 01) needs the E188838 and the BR E 41 needs most probably a 60941 all your other steam locos and BR V 200 a 60944 conversion set. |

John: I know you have done lots of conversions but I have completed about a dozen and haven't had issue with slow speed running with the ESU Lokpilot Decoder and the Permanent Magnet while maintaining the 3 pole motor. All can crawl along very smoothly. But since I have never fully converted maybe I am missing something. I will have to try one and see if I notice a difference. Chris
