Hi All,

I purchased a second hand Marlin 5571 BR 218 diesel loco. The motor was partially seized, it was taking a very high current even with no load. I tried taking the motor apart a fixing it, but it is impossible to open. I found the spare parts catalogue for this motor, but the replacement motor part is no longer available.
I assume a newer motor would also be suitable, but I have no idea which part to order. Can you guys help me out with that?

This is how the original motor looks like:
marklinmotor.jpg

I checked a recent BR78 loco, and the replacement motor for that is E331643. Would that be suitable for my BR 218 as well?

Btw, could you tell how old this 5571 loco is? In which years in was manufactured? I could only find the spare parts document for it, but that has no year.

Aside from the splines on the motor shaft, it looks like a motor used in remote control model boats..

They were manufactured from 1994 to 1999.

Download the Spur 1 item guide I uploaded in post #6 in the following thread.

You will find details of 5571 on page 65.

Thanks a lot. This is very interesting. It came in a Marklin box saying 5571, but it looks like that I have a 85571. Because I have the factory weathered version.

Any ideas about the replacement motor?

Have you tried oiling the bearings? I suspect that is all that is needed.

here is how I would do it: -
get a shallow dish that the end of the motor will fit into. Put about 3mm depth of oil and put the 'back end' of the motor into it until the end of the bronze bearing is in the oil (you may need to bend the motor connections so it will go low enough, or have the oil deeper). Leave it soaking for an hour or two, then turn the motor end for end and soak the other bearing.

Those sintered bronze bearings need to be soaked in oil for best life. because they are porous they will soak up the oil, and then you can wipe off the outside. when done.

Thanks Alan, I am afraid it is too late for this particular motor. Since the engine had small mould marks, I was assuming that maybe some rust around the rotor or other parts, so I was trying to take it apart for cleaning. The clips holding the back are way to strong, I had to file them away. I was able to remove the back, but I could not remove the rotor, the pinion gear so it ended at that state.

Try again, maybe get a mechanic or similar to help you.

Having the right tools and heating the cogwheel / pinion gear might help.

It will be much easier for you to find a replacement, if you can use the original cogwheel again.

Just out of interest, these motors look very similar to the ones in my Marklin 55224 BR194.

E94-2.jpg

Marklin part number for the motors in the 55224 is E247228. These are in stock at the Marklin Shop for €52.50 each.

Thanks guys. I am assuming Marklin is using just a few different motor designs in all their engines maybe the only difference if it comes with a pinion gear or a worm drive. I have emails Marklin support about 1 month ago, I hope I will get some response from them as well.
Width of the motor is 36 mm (the main cylinder body), the two mounting screw on the from are 25mm apart, shaft is 3.175mm (1/8 inch) length of the main body is 50mm, and the pinion gear is 11 teeth.

I ordered the motor Alberto recommended with a gear puller, let's see if I can swap them when that arrives.

Cheers,
Csongor

To be honest, I was checking the spare parts document for some random Marklin locos, and the new DB 103 (55105) appears to have the same setup as my loco:
motor.png

There is this drive block which sits in the middle of the loco and transfers the motion from the motor down to the cardan shafts under the main chassis. And the motor is mounted with the two screws onto this drive block.

Germans are efficient so it something has worked in the past, they may just use if for 20 years, right? Therefore the E138170 motor would be compatible Laugh

Oh my! OhMyGod Scared RollEyes

If these motors cost less than 5€ apiece, and you need 2 of them, would it not be possible to find a way to extract and reuse the worm-drive for (a lot) less than a 100 € ??
It must really be discouraged paying M 10x more for the part, just for adding a screw to the shaft of it. IMHO
-Or does anybody here really think that the motors sold by M are "special" in any way? (in which case you would be dead-wrong, of course! BigGrin )
