Working on another diorama. I wanted to try something with an elevation. One kit on the upper level and two buildings in the front. Kit used:
1) Vollmer Village Inn - I seemed to have problem with the fit on this kit, lot of gaps in the corners. I extended the building and added a concrete area.
2) Faller villa - no fitting problems
3) Faller rural half-timbered house - nice kit

Base was cut from 1/2 inch 2x4 styrofoam. Elevation section came from some packing materials. The walls are 3/8 foam board from dollar store. I removed the paper backing and engraved the stone patters with a fine point marker.

The black cobblestones sections came from Faller. Grey area are stamped with square tubing.

That's all for now.

I am not really happy with the cobblestones. So I redid the ground. The tile section on the left is by Evergreen styrene sheet, the cobblestone section is from Kibri, which I do like a lot. Unfortunately, it is very hard to find these days. The roman cobblestones area is from Faller. Stone path were engraved with a needle. I gave it a quick coat of light grey paint.

Did some weathering. The cobblestones were painted with various shade of greys using water color markers. Followed with a enamel brown filter. As for the tile section, I gave each square a random grey and brown washes. When I redid the ground, I have to tear off the old wall. New one were made the same way but painted slightly differently.

The paver on the second level is made by Busch. The stairs are made from styrene. The stone slab on top of the walls were board foam cut to the desired size. They were painted with concrete color, followed by grey washes. Random light and dark green moss colors were dabbed on the surface. And finally they were toned down by light grey drybrush.

Next is to work on the elevated areas.

I like to add decent number of figures in my diorama. At time this can be a drag. To try to speed up the painting process, I bought a set of Ohuhu watercolor dual tip marker.

Figures airbrush with with light tan Tamiya acrylic paint.

The watercolor marker cover well. Unfortunately, the paint rub off easily even after 24hr. I guess a clear coat might have solved the problem. Secondly, the colors seem to bleed to the adjacent areas. I wonder may be I lay down the color too thick. Either way, extra cares will need to be taken and that defeat the purpose to make the painting process easier. Next I tried the ohuhu alcohol marker. First issue is that it dried glossy. Second issue is that it is hard to paint larger areas like the clothes and pants due to streaking. However, they are excellent for painting shoes, small bags and hair.

Back to tradition way with hand painting. Colors are mostly Vallejo Model Paint.

The brick walls surround the cement area are made from foam board wrapped with scaled brick paper.

Added static grass, painted the rock face and made a small steps from styrene.

Next is to make some accessories.

Those figures look pretty good to me.

maybe to stop the initial spray coat from coming off you need some form of etch primer? The plastic as supplied is pretty smooth, so maybe a surface roughening with an etch primer would help.

Hi kiwiAlan,

Thanks for the advice. However, the issue I am facing is not the base coat lifting, rather it is the water based marker paint not fully cured. I might try a different brand of markers in the future and report back.

This is Faller 140442. Nice stands to fill up spaces in the diorama.

This is Busch 1209. They are very nice. Highly recommended.

Trash bin from Faller and home make plants.

Hi John JeanB,

Thanks for checking in for the build. I am certain if you practice on a few kits, you will be better than I am. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask. I will be more than happy to answer.

This one is done. Though it is my latest diorama, I am not truly happy with it. Will try to do better on the next one.

Awesome, I like it a lot.

One question, if you plan to make more, do you intend designing them to become individual seemless parts of a larger scene? Easy way to transport/store your layout. :-)

Great work

Hi cookee_nz,

All the dioramas are stand alone. I did intend to do a larger one, which was my 4'x8' Marklin layout. Unfortunately, that project has been put on hold indefinitely.
