Hi fellas!

Following info from a couple of threads in this fine board, I decided to upgrade my Harry Potter wagons (29550) by adding lights to coaches.

Current conducting couplers (RTS 59100) are on their way, already have a box of fixed cc couplers (7319) which I don't think I'll use, and axle contact leaf springs (72050) are also on their way. I have already rigged a couple of rectifier/current reducer thingies and will use LED tape. I had to shave down the ballast weight to make room for a relay (salvaged from old electronics equipment, maybe an amp or something).

The relay will go in series with the gray wire so that the function button on the 6021 turns the coach lights on at the same time as the head light. The ccc will carry power from the pick up shoe in the tender to the coaches. The leaf springs will complete the circuit.

Questions.

  • Is the solder point between the gray and orange wires, an empty yellow wire connection (for a rear light)?

  • What type of decoder is this? Is it worth replacing it? And if I do that, does the motor need to be replaced as well?

Thanks in advance for any advice. Take care.

The decoder is one of the 6090 family (the two potentiometers give this away).

Thanks, Alan. So basically lights only.

I am not familiar with the motor in the loco of that set, so can't advise you further than that.

as Alan pointed out its a 6090, more specifically a mini variant (MiniC90x)
you can find some more information here:https://moba-hgh.de/modellbahn/digital/decoder-traegerplatinen/fuer-lokomotiven/maerklin/digital/6090x-c90x/standard#platinen-4

and you are probably right in the assumption of the empty soldering pad next to the grey, ref: https://moba-hgh.de/modellbahn/digital/decoder-traegerplatinen/fuer-lokomotiven/maerklin/digital/maerklin-chips/2605-maerklin-chip-701-22x#die-verschiedenen-chips-dieses-typs-in-der-historie-2

I don't have the 29550, but since the motor is controlled bu a 6090x, I would be very surprised if you can not use a modern mLD3, ore similar, with the current motor.

Thank you bhp for that info.

Setting the relay in parallel with the headlight didn't provide enough juice to activate it (function). Setting it in series worked but kept the light on at all times. The only way to turn it off is to press stop. Didn't like that idea. It may have fried the function part of the decoder.

So I decided to replace the decoder with a 60972. This will allow me to keep the headlight on its own circuit (function) and hopefully use aux1 for the relay to activate the coach lights.

I'll update when surgery is complete.

Well, that worked out.

Used an 'AC-DC Converter 6/12/24V to 12V Full-Bridge Rectifier Filter Power Supply Module' (sounds fancy but it's nothing but four diodes and a capacitor on a little board from amazon) attached to a '7812 Voltage Regulator' to feed the LED strip 12V with a couple of 2.2 kohm resistors for dimming. Waiting on more current conducting couplers to convert four more cars.

Thanks again for your advice.

there is also this solution that i want to test to light up these cars:

http://www.train-tech.co.../interior-coach-lighting

ideally I would have liked to put an msd3 decoder and conductive couplings but I do not know if it is possible with the engine of this locomotive ....
