Hi, I have been looking at getting an old set 41576 of three postal coaches. Can anyone tell me if they were used for international cross border traffic. I’m assuming this would of happened?
Thanks Dan.

AFAIK:
1) No border-crossings (ignoring the Basel runs).
2) 1980-1997 existed Post Intercity trains which matched the set:

There must have been cross border postal trains. Was it just wagon load?

The coaches of that set replicates Bahnpostwagen. Single coaches were attached to regular trains or ran as “pure” consists (see my previous post). They were rolling post offices manned by German postal officials, who processed and sorted mail during the trip. For sure the German postal officials were not allowed to cross a border. Besides, there used to be box cars without staff inside. Maybe the latter were used for cross-border transit?

Hi Dan,
I believe your 41576 set is for era IV - nice set!

However I have seen photos from the 1950s and 60s, showing SNCF red postal cars on German trains.
Whether the reverse applied, or if that traffic continued into era IV I cannot say.

Here is a useful topic on Railways of Germany forum, with a lot of photos of German postal trafffic.

Hi Dan,

It occurred to me that up until the early 1990's there were still nominal 'zones of occupation' across West Germany , as it was back then. The South West of Germany was still the French Zone with many French and American troops and barracks still present. I think it highly likely that there would have been many SNCF rail and postal movements from the Strassburg and Metz areas into the Saarland and Baden-Wuerttemberg to support the French troops. I know there was a daily road coach service from the Reutlingen / Tubingen area to Strassburg for them.

Hi, so it must have been goods wagons attached to regular Freight trains. Perhaps 47360?

I have Marklin Belgium post wagons. But my assumption that international trains from Brussels ect may well have had the odd post coach attached in era 3 and 4?
Thanks all for your reply’s :-)👍

Those were postal coaches for French military traffic only. They disappeared after the German re-unification. A specimen in Offenburg in 1976:

Probably postal sacks were exchanged between the respective national postal services at border stations, e.g., unloaded from a German car and loaded into a Belgian car and vice versa.

It is an obscure realm, and I never wasted any thoughts on it before. In 2002, MIBA published special edition no. 51 on "Bahnpost". One of the articles mentions the need for cross-border postal delivery without going into detail. Furthermore, the publication contains a 1963 photograph shot in the West German ferry port of Puttgarden which shows a West German postal coach being pushed aboard the West German ferry "Theodor Heuss"; according to the caption, the postal coach is destined for Roedby, the "opposite" Danish ferry port (and first train station on the Danish side), while cross-border passenger trains were heading all the way to Copenhagen (or even further to Sweden). This supports my assumption that postal sacks were swapped between respective national postal services at the border, as it was the practice to swap postal sacks between trains in a big city "Postbahnhof" for further distribution within the same country. Why am I stressing West German? Because there was a different cross-border in regime in the former GDR.

"shot in the West German ferry port of Puttgarden" could have been my epitaph resulting from a border incident when I was Inter-Railing in my youth!

As far as I know, did DB not own any postal coaches, they were all DBP (Deutsches Bundes Post) property, but they ran in DB trains.
