I have a BR 50 locomotive that I bought in 1989. The decoder soon failed when I used the smoke unit, so I sent it back to Märkin in 1989 or 1990.
They replaced the decoder and mailed it back to South Africa. (I paid duty! ugh!)

Same result, decoder fried as soon as I switched the smoke unit on.

I wrote to them again and suggested they simply mail me a new doceder, which they did I installed it some 30 years ago.

This week, I noticed that the loco will not drive unless it has had its direction changed!

I have not seen a decoder do this before, I assume some output component is failing and switching directions resets it somehow. Once the direction has been toggled, the loco drives about fine, both forward and reverse.

At some stage I will install a new decoder, probably a LokPilot, so I can switch the lights and smoke independently. (Not interested in another sound decoder, I find that a couple on the layout is enough!) I may upgrade the lights to use LEDs too.

I thought the symptoms may be interesting to others.

Hi Dale

I have also a peculiar loco (BR 50 from the 26 340 set back in 2012) It has MFX sound and even when brand new it would have its motor (magnet coffee grinder) stop but only when the sound was on and only after receiving a number of digital orders (speed change, reverse) of 10 or so. All other functions are fine. The problem occurred only when Sound was on. When the motor is "dead", all you have to do is to cut off the sound and then on with any sound it will restart. Funny isn't it?
I sent it back to Lippe (MSL in Germany) and they kept it (or sent it to Märklin) for more than 3 months and the loco came back with still the problem. So I gave up.

Long story to say that on programmed logic and microprocessors a memory programming error can give this.
Shit happens as they say in uncivilized places.
Jean
