Many years ago I purchased a nice older collection and among the items was a novelty, a small pocket diary for 1961.

Frank Ronneburg writes a small article about them on his website (https://tischbahn.de/kleine-geschenke-der-kalender-von-1961)

Apart from the obvious German, the booklet is also known to have been printed in Dutch, French, English, and Spanish, no doubt other languages may also exist.

It's a delightful little memento and contains many pictures I have not seen before, some cartoons or anecdotes and a History of Marklin starts the diary across several pages.

Finally I got around to scanning it and will share over the next few days/weeks for those who are interested as time allows.

It's quite small, around 10.5 x 9 cm so it was a bit fiddly to scan - and apologies in advance for a few skewed slightly pages. Fortunately it was never used so the pages are nice and clean for almost 60 years old. I've had to scan quite large so the small print is readable.

Enjoy (does anyone else have one?)

Wow, does that bring back memories !!!!!!!!!!!!! Drool

I had one when they were current, as a result of my Dad doing Marklin repairs for H W Clarke when they were the NZ agents.

I don't know what happened to it, I presume it got thrown out at some stage. Crying Blushing Angry

I have no idea how many were imported into NZ.

GOLD - there are some other classic 'pearls of wisdom' they'd probably never get away with these days. Definitely harks back to an earlier more innocent time with Märklin :-)

I have only ever seen the one for 1961, if there were others I would have expected them to turn up by now.

But..... people would have said that about this one - you don't know what you don't know.

It appears they were given away rather than sold, I do not (yet) have the Sales Aid / Werbehilfen dealer catalogue for 1960 or 1961 so cannot even confirm if it is shown in either.

But there is not one in the 1962 "Publicity Aids" catalogue which I do have so it may have been a "one-hit wonder".

If it was a give-away, it would have been reasonably large numbers, and in several languages so it would have been quite an expensive exercise. Perhaps dealers were given a certain allocation and encouraged to give them to their more regular customers as an appreciation.

From what I can gather, they were probably a Christmas giveaway for 1960 and this could perhaps have followed on from the excitement and hype of the 1959 Centenary celebrations?

Next round of images..... into August - and I'm not sure you could get away with the first quote today but you have to remember these were very different times ....

87-0806-0812.jpg 87

"First God created the man (*) then he created the woman.
Afterwards he was sorry for the man and gave him a - Märklin Model Railway!"

89-0813-0819.jpg 89
*
The father - very cleverly -
thinks of a durable gift and according to a well-conceived plan,
He gave him a Märklin model railway.

Consider your gifts as early as possble and think of the child in man.

There is no doubt in any mind: It's got to be the Märklin kind!

91-0820-0826.jpg 91

A MÄRKLIN metal construction set has to be handled and operated very carefully.
In this way the user is trained for the responsible working methods he is faced with later in his job.

93-0827-0902.jpg 93

You will thoroughly enjoy assembling your own MÄRKLIN vehicles. Pick the low-priced set
required for the purpose from the MÄRKLIN catalogue.

I have a copy of the pocket diary for the same year, 1961, except the text is in German. The vinyl? cover, illustrations, photos and page layout are identical to those in the English version. It may be the only year they were printed as Cookee speculated. I would otherwise expect to have additional ones from the same era. We lived in Heidelberg from 1959 to 1963. My father was a regular Märklin (and Fallar and Kibri) buyer at the Carl Knoblauch toy and stationary store that used to be on the Sophienstrasse. I later bought my first LGB locomotive, a No. 2040 RhB baby krokodil there in the mid 1980s. They had a very extensive model train department with the toys on the second floor. A kid favorite was the curved slide they had to get back down to the ground floor.

How times have changed.

What follows is quite interesting. Particularly the quite open references to The Bible. Now before anyone gets up in arms, yes Politics and Religion are generally no-go areas in this forum for good reason.

But, that aside, this is found in a vintage Märklin publication that is now almost 60 years old - hard to believe. The story is rather quaint, perhaps a bit whimsical but it makes you wonder whether the author of this text was a direct Märklin employee, or perhaps an external agency?

Personally, I feel it's more likely to be an internal author given that at that time, Märklin was definitely enjoying great popularity and would continue to do for for at least the next couple of decades before other past-times gained greater prominence.

So, let's be clear, discussion is welcome about the relevance at that period in time, but is NOT to be a discussion on Religion as such - whatever your personal beliefs. Please exercise restraint and good-will toward your fellow modellers.

THE HONEYMOON

127a-scan0040.jpg 127

129-The Honeymoon.jpg 129

131-The Honeymoon.jpg 131

133-images.jpg 133

The Honeymoon

The knowledge that children will be children and therefore have childish inclinations is as old as the First Epistle to the Corinthians in which this is stated. But at a certain age children begin to copy the behaviour of grown-ups so thoroughly that we only have the choice either to be shocked or to take it as a good joke!

This time it was our turn to be surprised. First Udo, the master builder of the block of houses, built his model railway. A train ran on rails round the room electrically, small but nevertheless realistic because it had all the spectacular features of its big and impressive counterpart. This railway had the same signals, red and green, as the real one. The trains thundered over bridges, switches and turntables, on the station stood the porter of the site of a thumb nail, and in the tunnel it was pitch dark.

But what are all illustrations if they cannot be shared with a companion who admires them and envies you? This friend was absent today because Harold, his brother, was riding his bicycle in the street. Kaspar, his friend, was in bed with German measles. So his mother said: "Listen, Udo, I'll call Ursula from next door. A girl like that would love to have a ride on your railway."

Udo objected emphatically. Boys do not play with girls. The idea! Sliding about on the carpet was a man's job, and giving signals with a whistle just as unsuitable for a girl, as waving the stationmaster's baton. "But Ursula is such a nice girl", insisted mother. "Ah, there you are, interjected Udo, "Nice girls divert your attention and then the train will run off the rails."

Thus, the argument continued. Mother would so much have liked her boy to combine roughness with mildness. So she made one more effort: "Well, you could at least allow Ursula to look on. She can wave as the train goes by."

"Wave?"
"Yes."
"All right, then."

So Ursula, the fair-haired girl, arrived. First to do the waving. Then she had clean the coach door handles at every station. Until, at last, Udo found the proper occupation for this attractive girl: "We can play at honeymoon." How curious that this bold idea occurred to him just when his mother had gone out for a short while!

Children's fantasy develops much more freely if they are unobserved and alone. But how did the two figure to themselves a honeymoon trip? Nothing simpler than that: Udo fetched his father's top hat from the cupboard, stuffed it with paper and put it on.

Ursula snatched a curtain from the washing basket and draped it over her hair as a veil. Then the through train, a MARKLIN express, was strewn with flowers and sent on its great journey...

Hand in hand, the two sat on the carpet and imagined themselves to be sitting in the brightly coloured coach. With happy eyes they saw the Rhine, the Alps, the Black Forest and the blue sea.

They admired castles and cathedrals, they collected flowers in meadows and shells on the beaches...

They were so absorbed in their game that they did not even notice when mother entered the room. And she paused for a second or two to allow this holiday mood to have its effect on her.

Yes, she only cut short the idyllic situation when Udo put his arm round Ursula and kissed her cheek.
"I say, Udo", exclaimed his mother.
"Please be quiet, Mum, we were just passing through a tunnel", replied her offspring without being in the least embarrassed.

That is how it happened, and the First Epistle to the Corinthians contains one of the greatest truths. We have already mentioned it. God bless children's innocent pastimes!

Dear MÄRKLIN friend!

Your wish that models should be a faithful copy of the original and of top quality can be fulfilled at a reasonable price. MÄRKLIN can give all these assurances, thanks to their

- 100 years of experience in toy manufacture
- Up-to-date production techniques.
- Exclusive use of high-grade materials.

These advantages and the experience of over 2000 employees are the basis of MÄRKLIN's outstanding performance.

All members of the House of MÄRKLIN will continue to work creatively, artistically and in the educational sense, knowing their field is the world.

Formerly it was the horse-drawn MÄRKLIN tram - today it is the MÄRKLIN Model Railway* which unites father and son in play.

For 100 years MÄRKLIN products have been increasingly in demand because today as in our great grandfathers' time:

There is no doubt in any mind;
It's got to be the MÄRKLIN kind!

* The MÄRKLIN H0 Model Railway is the best MÄRKLIN railway ever devised!

Father and Son??, I'm sure more than a few Father's and Daughters, or even Mother's and Daughters might have a word or two to say about that!!
