Hi All,

I'm new to Marklin trains and was wondering how much these sets are
worth in MINT condition. I've included photos in the CL links.

Marklin RET 848/3
https://boston.craigslis...ains-set/7106918826.html

Marklin DA 846/3
https://boston.craigslis...set-mint/7106920874.html

Thanks,
Doug

Hi Doug

Very nice train sets, they are not mint (means they were never used) but the locos and cars are very close to it.
In Europe the DA846/3 would sell IMO for approx for €260 and the RET848/3 for €320 plus shipment. This is very subjective. On one hand the trains are in superb condition (not the boxes) but a lot of people are selling now I think.
The price in the US is probably very different This I don't know Sorry
Cheers Jean

Hi- agreed with Jean. Careful with the word mint, but lovely condition! Unless of course you are looking for a mint value, and deducting for your sets, in which case I would add maybe 20% over yours for truly mint sets? But those are so few and far between the only real way to test value is an auction that show what people are willing to pay. You ight get no more, you might get double. it all depends how many people are after it.

They are worth more as an original set with box than the sum of their pieces. If you were to place them on ebay or similar, I think that is where any extra value would come from.

In terms of US pricing, I'd say the DA set is worth little less than Jean mentions, but there is an important variable: is the locomotive boiler plastic or metal? Weight will feel metal regardless, but look closely: the older production models are plastic. And counterintuitively the plastic version is worth considerably more.

Thanks for the reply.

Yes, I should rephrase the "MINT" statement.
The sets were bought new in 1955 from Fao Schwarz and never used.

About the "locomotive boiler plastic or metal", a magnet does not stick to
it, but some people think this might be a Al-Mn allow...?...

If you pull the one screw on top and pull off the boiler it should quickly reveal the material it's made of. Good luck!

Doug - Condition appears to be very good on all of your items. This part of the forum is not really directed to buying and selling, but most readers here can give you more information about your trains. I sent you an email earlier if you want to chat off the forum or post additional questions here and we'll try to help you identify exactly what you have.

Regards,

Kurt

Welcome Doug, very nice sets. I'm sure you'll get a PM or two about them.

Of course we'd prefer to talk you into keeping them and join this wonderful hobby.

The first set is a Swiss SBB Re 4/4 I with light steel coaches. The second set is a DB BR 23 steamer with mainline coaches.
The Re 4/4I had an all metal body. The BR 23 (DA800/3005) came with a plastic body on a metal frame.
My family inherited the Swiss set from a family friend in the 1960s. I don't know if it was the RET 848 set or the same set under the new numbering system.
We also inherited a 3005, but I don't know if it came from a set or not. The tracks that we inherited all came with the solid centre rail.

Hi all,

One way to determine if it is the first DA800 version is when both front and rear bogies are red it is the oldest version (If 100% original then with plastic body/boiler) and if they are black it is later version with metal boiler.

Cheers,
Janne

Hi,

And I have always wondered where that Esso Univesal Oil can has come to my Märklin stuff.
I can't remember it from my youth but it must be because I wasn't involved in servicing the
locomotives for obvious reason.
My father and uncle bought three sets when they were infected with this dise... hobby Laugh
