I just found this 3027 at ebay.

www.ebay.de/itm/MARKLIN-DAMPFLOK-44-690-3027-OVP-TOP

It appears to be the latest version of 3027, 1960 - 1963. But with a smoke generator. I thought that the first BR 44 with smoke was 3047.

Neither Koll nor lokmuseum.de describes a version of 3027 with smoke.

What am I missing ?

Possibility it may have been modified to add the smoke generator. Or it may be a 3047 that has been misidentified

Hey mvd71, thanks for your answer.

My first thought too was that it is modified. Because the loco actually have the 3027 number in the casting at the right side of the drivers cabin. Hence it cannot be a 3047. It is either a modified loco or an unknown (to me at least) version. Could it be, that Märklin has made some 3047 locos with a 3027 body? But this locos box has printet 3027 on it. I think it is a mystery.

EDIT
It might not be modifed, nor even rare. I just found another one ebay.de/itm/LOT-62284-Marklin-H0-3027-Dampflok-mit-Tender-BR-44-in-OVP

Best regards
Thomas

Thomas, the 3047 did have the number 3027 on the side of the loco and tender (build for 4 years from 1958-1961., the only difference is some one modified the loco and drilled a hole for smoke generator, everything else is original

Hey John. Thanks for your answer. I am the proud owner of a 3027 from 1960, and I am aware, that Märklin changed the catalog number from 3027 to 3047 between 1963 and 1964. Probably because they added the smoke generator, I think.

That is why I was surprised to see a 3027 with smoke.

But at this moment, at least two 3027 with smoke is for sale on ebay. See the links above.

It also surprise me, that it seems to be a fairly common thing, to modify this loco with a smoke generator. But then again, it is not that difficult an operation.

I just wanted to hear, if someone knew about a rare version. Could be, that Märklin by accident had used the 3027 body in some 3047. Like the version with the wrong tender.

Best regards
Thomas

Thomas, no, its not a rare loco, merely someone drilled a hole into it as the loco in question had an opening on top but than it was solid metal, I've done the same with my loco (3027)
It would be interesting to see the inside of the loco, how they've manged to add a connecting pad as the later loco is slightly different in the design.

John, I had the same thought, how it is connected inside, when I realised it is not original. I gues it is possible just to solder a wire to the bottom of the smoke generator. But it would of course be a better and more durable solution if it is possibel to add the pad.

Well, I placed a bid on it, so maybe I get to see it.

How did you connect it in yours?

Hello kaav800,

Thanks for your answer. I also think it is strange. But actually, it is not a 3047, except it is the 3047´s predecessor 3027, which should not have the smoke generator. But this one does. At first, I believed (hoped) that it might be an unknown and very rare version of the 3027, but I must realise that it is not, it is in fact a normal 3027, which someone has modified and added a smoke generator at.

Thus, unfortunally, no sensational new discovery.

And then again.... I discovered, that it is not uncommon, that a smoke generator is added to a 3027 by drilling a hole, as desribed by John (see above), who have done this at his own 3027. Also, I found at least two 3027 for sale right now at ebay with this modification.

That was new to me, and I find it very interesting.

Thank you all
Thomas
