I bought the following on ebay:
Marklin 43586 - Bilevel Cab Control Car
It has directional lighting control, meaning it knows when it’s being pushed or pulled (withouT a decoder) . I can’t figure out how it knows! Does someone happen to know how this magic works? I see some circuitry inside when i look carefully. Does it use an accelerometer perhaps?

Thanks in advance
David

Like all of the modern Maerklin pilot coaches, this model has a contact integrated into the bogie which causes a contact when the coach is moving in one direction, which causes the lights to change from white to red (or red to white). When the coach is pulled in the other direction, this contact is not made and the lights remain in the default setting.

Ahh wow, thats what that is for. I have the same solution as in the 2nd photo. Those 2 pins with that plate in between them. I cleaned it all up without really knowing what it was for :) Clever low-tech solution :) just causes a bit of drag. Could you use a tiny bit of electrically conductive silicone grease on the axle where the plate sits? Or better not?

Thanks for clearing that up Mike!
