Example

  • Märklin 2007/08 catalogue page 502 original Märklin track 5935, r=1.020 mm., 22.5 degrees. This is the last catalogue with the original Märklin track
  • Märklin 2008/09 catalogue tells that they had bought Hübner in the summer of 2008. However, this particular track is not in that catalogue, so Hübner probably did not have that small radius. Range with a product number '0' in the middle:
  • Märklin 2019/20 catalogue page 384 Hübner type track 59035, r=1.020 mm., 22.5 degrees

Can these 5935 and 59035 replace each other?

Yes, the track geometry and the rail profile is the same.

The rails on 5935 is stainless steel, on 59035 it is nickel-silver.

The plastic parts making the ties are also a bit different, and also the color of the plastic.

Per.

Cool

Thanks a lot!

Is it a nickel-silver alloy or are they silver coated?

Why this change? Production or usage considerations?

And, any idea why Märklin did this change? They say in the 2008 catalogue that they got expanded range of track. Any other reason?

It's a nickel-silver alloy, it can be soldered, and it's a bit yellow-ish in the color.

Märklin bought the company "Hübner", when Mr. Hübner got ill and couldn't keep his company. None of his family wanted to take over,
so finally Märklin bought it. Hübner had for many years build the prototypes / master models for many of the models in
Märklin's 1-gauge range; but at the same time build and sold their own models; usually finer and more detailed than Märklin's.
I think that many of the Märklin-labelled models were in reality build by Hübner, just with the Märklin name on them. A lot of the
1-gauge models introduced by Märklin since 2008 are in reality older Hübner models, that why the prices are now higher and
the rolling stock more detailed.

Why Märklin stopped making their own tracks and started to only sell the Hübner type, I don't know. You can still find the original
Hübner item numbers, even on Märklin's home page, e.g. the 59035 is listed as "Radius 1.020 mm. 22,5°. (H1038-1)" - "H" for Hübner. BigGrin

Hübner also had a large range of detailing parts, and also build and sold 0-gauge models.

Generally everything with the name Hübner on it is sought after and higher priced than Märklin.

Thanks a lot, Per!

This was so interesting and new to me!

I gather that Märklin must have had a special relationship to Hübner since they named them for so many years, and also in the 2019/2020 catalogue they have kept the H-numbers referenced.

The German eBay search was really interesting!
