I was wondering what the real controls of a turntable look like.

I did some image searches a could only find one linked to Pinterest, but could not see the full image...

https://www.pinterest.com/pin/44895327523438134/

and I am not sure if that is what it is....

Perhaps you can do some screenshots from this turntable video. In the video is said a week later this turntable was dismantled.

or you must use one picture outside of the cabin from a museum. I guess it is too late getting a new picture from an active turntable.

Oh I found another oneBlink

If you scroll down long enough you come to a view from outside into a turntable cabin. But unfortunately no picture from the panel directly inside. Perhaps on your trip to Germany you do a longer detour and make a picture by yourself?Smile

thanks TEEwolf, I was able to get some good views from the video.

Any idea what the L1 L2 L3 signify? Laufwerk 1 - 3 ???

I presume the signal style lever is to apply some sort of brake/locking mechanism.

what I also find interesting is that the directions are labelled 'forwards' and 'backwards', instead of indicating clockwise / anti-clockwise. This means that the operator has to know that forwards equates to one or the other, introducing an opportunity for human error.

Perhaps those labels have been added in modern times, without following some rule book on how they should be labelled.

Above the 3 lights are the word "Betriebsbereitschaft", which translates to "operational readiness" Cool

https://www.linguee.com/...etriebsbereitschaft.html

L1 / L2 / L3 is for an electrician usually used for the 3 phases, so my guess is that it shows
that power is available on each of the 3 phases supplying the turntable Cool

Also just guessing, I think the controls could look in many different ways, since they are so simple, that they probably are made locally.

They are "modern" Dymo or Brother labels, so yes.

I'm quite sure the control panel is installed after the turntable was originally installed.

When the very first turntables were installed, there was no electricity available anywhere.

Then for 40 - 50 years, everything was DC; and only after that came AC, which the controls you now see are made for.

In the "DC-era", it was probably just a big breaker / switch. Cool

I am going to try to visit the turntable pictured in the post by Markus, when I visit Munich in March.
It appears that they have made it into a park where one can wonder about!

Not quite sure you mean by "mentioning Bavarian rail". His link refers to the so called "Länderbahn Forum" (Federal County Rail Forum).

Before the DR (= "Deutsche Reichsbahn") was founded the single counties were running their own railways. The so called "Länderbahnen".

https://en.wikipedia.org...rbahn_era_(1871_to_1920)

Actually these county states were kingdoms. Like the

Royal Saxon State Railways
https://en.wikipedia.org...yal_Saxon_State_Railways

Royal Wuerttemberg State Railways
https://en.wikipedia.org...rttemberg_State_Railways

Royal Bavarian State Railways
https://en.wikipedia.org..._Bavarian_State_Railways

If you have some time while visiting München, you may go into the Deutsches Musem. Inside you see the old S 3/6 Hochhaxige (or as I say High HeelsSmile - Maerklin art #39436) in the original from the Royal Bavarian State Railways (K.BAY.STS.B). It is a loco from the Bavarian rail.

I think the track you're looking at is just a piece of rail on it's side, the Bavarian track is passing the turntable on the far right.

Made a park? Google earth tells a different story. Parts of the cargo shunting yard are still existing, but between the tracks are now trees growing. All this very strange knowing a square meter earth for building a house up there costs about 500 €/m² to 1000 €/m². Not really cheap.BigGrin

But the area seems to be reconsturcted for other railway purposes. You see new railway lines, a new training centre for loco engineeres. I know they are planning further tracks to connect different routing directions much better without shunting the locos for a change of direction of trains. Nevertheless I doubt it the turntabel will be still there. The report "Eine bayerische Drehscheibe" is from 2005 and 15 years old. I guess such a turntable you may see nowadays only in a railroad museum.

The next museum I just remember with a turntable is the "Lokwelt Freilassing" (6 miles before Salzburg/Austria) and 2 hours by train from München.

https://www.lokwelt.freilassing.de/lokwelt/start/

https://blog.berchtesgad...r-lokwelt/drehscheibe-2/

But also only 10 miles away from H.-P- Porsches dreamwork.

Well, yes, correct, the turntable is located in München, which is always in Bavaria and therefore a part of a Bavarian rail. I guessed he means either this turntabel was still built by the Royal Bavarian State Railways or was already built by the German State Railways (= DR = Deutsche Reichsbahn, founded in 1920).

I refer to the discussion in the article above the pictures.

" Whether it is a Bavarian turntable, I could not determine exactly. The fact is that there was a short piece of Bavarian SF X track leading to it. The steel profile of the stage was supplied by the Maxhütte, the still installed stage track dates back to 1922. Should it be the first one, or has it already been replaced? Maybe it was not S49 Profile, but SF X. The dimensions were almost identical."

The Maxhuette was a steel plant in the Northern part of Bavaria.

No, he talks about the profile of the actual rails, which were different when it was "Royal Bavarian State Railways"
compared to the track profiles used by Deutsche Reichsbahn Cool

When the author writes "bayerisches SF X Gleis" it means "bayerisches Schienen-form X Gleis" Cool

Oh thank you. I saw it but because of the still remaining tracks, I did not connect and combine it with an park. But more important, now I see the turntable! Still there! Unbelievable. I have been in this area quite often, but never on the railway ground. It is a huge area and normally in Germany to step on railroad facilities is forbidden. So hopefully you find a way up there and show us your pictures from the control panel of the turntable.Wink.

I think, next time I visit München I have to try to go there too, even it is illegal.Smile

There is no control panel, please look at the last pictures Cool

The "steering wheel" in the turntable house is the switch / breaker I mentioned earlier.

In the "DC-era" it could even have had different speed settings Cool

Do you think the direction of rotating the wheel would govern the direction of rotation? Seems like a good human interface to me.

Hello Dale,

I made a little research in the local papers in München and I was wrong again. This Landschaftspark (landscape garden) was opened May last year. It is still a debate about the name. The architectures want to name it "Gleispark" (track park) because it is part of the concept. Keeping the tracks with all there iron, stones ties, etc. in the park. It has not very much to do as normally is understood by a landscape garden. A part of this garden will be this turn table too. More, they are searching some railway enthusiast which renewing the old one. Perhaps a job for you? BigGrin One is obvious: no problem for you to go there to see this turn table. Only a short walk from the S-Bahn station Berg am Laim.

Very interesting for me was the discussion before. The total area is about 13 ha (about 32 acres) and should be kept as a highly protected natural area, because there are some rare animals on this ground. The discussion ended that about 50% are be used for new flats and apartments with the allowance to build them higher as normal. The other 50% remain in the same shape as it was over the last decades while used by the German rail. Nevertheless people used the ground for walkers and finally they opened the “rail gardens” to the public and built foot ways and rest areas hoping the people do not walk over the old tracks. An very interesting and new concept for a city. Next time I visit München I go to this new Gleispark.

area plan - in the left up corner you see a circle, which is the old turn table. Right beside the footway

Best Regards

Wolfgang

yes, I was puzzled by their reply, since I saw pictures of the opening day brochure, and there are numerous pictures on the item in Google maps.
