Hello Marklinistas,

I will going in a couple weeks to the Amherst show in Springfield in Mass. and would love to meet any Marklin Forum members and their counterparts.
I went a couple of years ago and was delighted to see the incredible variety of layouts along with the local Marklin club and their rather impressive exhibit.

If you are thinking about coming its well worth it imho,
and I would be more than happy to meet up with others interested in European and especially Marklin trains.

Here is part of the blurb on their website:
Every year late in January or early in February, the Amherst Railway Society holds its Railroad Hobby Show at the Eastern States Exposition Fairgrounds (The home of The Big E) in West Springfield Massachusetts. More than 20,500 railfans and public attended the Show each of the past five years. In 2018, the 50th Anniversary Show boasted 400,000 square feet of trains and train related exhibits...that's 9 acres of [model] trains! ....

I have a friend that lives in Windsor Locks, CT who goes up to Amherst the following weekend for a tool show but I can't get him to go to the train show. I would like him to go and take some photos for me but...

The ETE-ENE will have our layout at the show. In fact, there will be a whole European section around us. Look for us in the Mallory building.

Lucky you Mark! Let us know how good the show is as I heard that it's quite the venue! I usually follow “monster railroad” Al on YouTube. Good look and good hunting!

Hi mmervine
I'll be looking for you! Quite enjoyed trying out the CS2 last time. Anyone in the club have a CS3? I am still running my loks with a 6021 but considering software to run addressed switches and loks.

I will likely be wearing a Mädchenbahn T shirt.

Cheers

We will be operating the layout with our CS3. The CS2 will be connected to it acting as a booster and two additional throttles.

So I am very familiar with Euro West and attended most years. I now live in Chicago and was thinking of heading to Euro East in Springfield Mass. Question for any that have attended, will I see lots of Marklin and other European items for sale? Or is the focus mainly on the layouts?

Would appreciate any feedback.

Thanks,

Chris

Hi Chris,

There are loads of sellers. Bring a limited amount of cash you want to spend... that's my way of working it out, since there is junk you just have to buy and new models that gleam ... but the actual Marklin was not a huge amount when I went there last in I think 2016. I do remember serious conversation with one of the Marklin sellers. Perhaps mmervine knows if there will be more. But there were other sellers selling European models and most of the major known brands. I wish however there were actual European reps there hawking their company wares. That would make it really interesting, most are dealers, which means you can get good deals of some of their overstock, and other without sales tax from smaller dealers.

The ETE club also did sell a few nice train cars which I bought. But in terms of other accessories, Faller models and any kind of landscaping material you might want to have, there is plenty for sale. ... There were also fabulous layouts of all variety and scales. If you need to have some decoders put in there was a semi retired engineer installing DC decoders on the spot. I bought some tiny coloured wire appropriate for decoders from him.

Thats just a few things I remember off the top of my hear at 2am.
Perhaps others who have attended more recently might say more.

BTW if you or either Dale do attend, I would love to meet up with you at the ETE layout or elsewhere in the sprawling complex. There is so much to see I believe last time I just had a stand up lunch walking around. Wear good shoes!

Cheers,

Hi Dale

I remember the reefer train... Some 150 cars long or some such number.
Let me know if you make it there.

BTW ...was looking at your pages on Remote Signs and accompanying software today. Thanks for posting that and having the downloads available.

You can see the entire album (1500+ photos) from last year:2019 Amherst Train Show

The ETE-NE folks have the best European/Marklin related layout every year, although you can sometimes spot Marklin or Trix trains on the odd layout here and there. There are usually 2-4 dealers carrying new Marklin, and another 4-7 with odd bits and pieces on their tables.

A couple of tips for first-time visitors:
  • The show is huge - four enormous buildings. You can't see everything in one day (or even two).
  • Take the time to linger and appreciate the layouts that interest you rather than rushing to see them all.
  • Wear comfy shoes and bring a water bottle. Dress in layers as it can get warm inside.
  • You'll have more success haggling over prices on Sunday afternoon than on Saturday morning.
  • Talk to folks! These are some of the most awesome model railroad (and real railroad) enthusiasts and they are genuinely happy to talk trains with you.

Cheers!
Mike

Yes, Marklin was at the show, but with a very limited display compared to other manufacturers who were also present at the show. Their booth was near the ETE-NE layout and they were showing some new products, such as the K Bay Sts B S 2/6 model above, as well as some new digital products. (BUT THEY DIDN"T HAVE ANY Z-SCALE AT THEIR BOOTH! Arrrrghhh....).

So great to hear there have been more European train dealers and a bigger Marklin presence at the show.

Looking forward to the show and chatting with likeminded individuals who might even know a word of two in German and likely more than I do...
...mine is rather limited to the basics but does include: Oberleitungsbetrieb, Schlafwagen,
Hochgeschwindigkeitsbahnsystem
and really important big words like Gleis and Lok.* .

I will be there coming Friday. Driving down from Montreal.
Also might find me with Ivan at the Montreal Model Train Exposition table at some point...
(Not sure where he is putting up the table yet.)

Peace,

Ok Marklinists all...

Tomorrow I will be at the Springfield show in the afternoon or evening setting up a table and looking around for the preview of the show.
If anyone is around then it would be great to meet up. ... likely you folks with the ETE will be setting up your layout and busy though.

I wanted to know if anyone would like to bring a boxed set of the Blauer Enzian set of cars to sell me. (46215) The 1954/55 livery.
I have been wanting to pick it up for some time.

Also open to suggestions of the appropriately matching loco to run in front.
I believe someone suggested BR 18 which would be ideal for me since that is another item I would like to get in digital with sound.

[Later edit: Looking through a previous discussion on Blue Gentian aka Blauer Enzian and it seems that Mike C suggested they were pulled by a BR E18; quite different from a BR 18]...

Feel free to contact me ahead of time if you have these items or if you willing to sell a used set out of your collection for a reasonable price or any items you might want to trade.

Looking forward to the big crazy event and having tired feet!
Cheers!

Mark Five...

Hello All

... a big THANK YOU shout out to so many of you from the ETE club as well as
the Marklin technical support team and Marklin dealers who came to the show.

I would like to have had many more conversations and learned more from all out of your
expertise and your patient kindness in explaining your divergent views about running trains
and the use of systems to run them.

I encourage all of us to continue the conversations started at the show, here online and elsewhere.
These friendships that work toward common concrete goals are worth building imho.

Cheers,

So happy now! Show was a big success for me as I found the following items.
I have been looking for this set for a long time and found it Scott Houseman's Helmut's Hobbies table. It was also nice to meet Scott and his crew in person. All very helpful.

RBDe560.jpg

Scott also had these two SOB cars so I could begin a representation of the Voralpen Express

SOB cars.jpg

Had fun chatting with fellow ETE guys. Got to meet Melvin Crabbe for the first time. He is a member of our chapter but lives in the UK and only gets here every 12 years or so for the show. He had a well executed micro-layout on display. Very much in the style of the small layouts in Railway Modeller.

I need to find time to get to more club meetings!

Sunday din't seem as crowded as I remember from other visits but weather was very pleasant for New England in late January.

Regards,
Roger

Hi all!

What a lovely show. A few memories and notes for those who were there, (and those who were not!):

1- I set a new record: 30 minutes from show opening to out of money! I have to laugh at this, but in fairness outside of the Helmuts Hobbies estate sale I only spent about $50... Scott just had items I was never going to see again, and required a surplus of spending. Once I'm settled I'll get some images into the "purchases 2020" thread

2- Just a note on the Helmuts Hobbies sale above- WOW. I'm still recovering, knowing it isn't an online sale it would have been worth a flight to the show on its own. I myself took home a few things, but I ended up buying some exceptional oddities/rarities for friends I've never seen before, and probably won't again. What a collection...

3- The marklin presence really looked nice! Rick and Curtis are of course always wonderful, but I have to say this time the brand itself did a good job of looking like a real manufacturer at the show with the display setup

4- Sorry for those of you whom I missed, or simply didn't know who to look for!

Is it worth to travel from other states, like Kentucky where I live, to take some vacation days and visit this show? The local show, in Louisville, is very small and displays only US layouts. Would love to see a good catalog of Märklin stock and meet individuals with a same interest. Any thoughts are appreciated.

Hi Marcel. Nice to meet you... a lot of Marklinists meet here online but having a face-to-face chat is really rewarding and can clear up a whole series of issues. I was writing down ideas and references and future questions in my notebook. I am especially grateful to Michael Haire for giving me a detailed rundown on how they have set up their layout with a CS3plus. ...and found it interesting how everybody had very different and strong ideas about setting up braking modules ....a whole other discussion for another thread. I like Dale's idea best, but pulling it off is another thing. It was great to pick Dale's brain on a wealth of digital issues, and even better to talk about time spent in South Africa... and other topics not directly related to the hobby.

I was also happy to get a few more continental European railway books for my collection (but there were not very many of them), along with 20 unboxed newish Roco coaches, most of which were in very good shape: $85 at the end of the Sunday from a seller not interested in taking them home. ... .

This is all to say you will only know if it is worth it to you if you go at least once and see.
It will undoubtedly be different each time. And you can only spend as much cash as you bring.
Except of course if the seller takes plastic... I left my plastic behind to force my limit.

Cheers,
Mark Five

ps It would be good to know ahead of time how many confirmed Marklin or European dealers there might be next year.

Thanks Dale,
I have read that particular page a few times with great interest and just read it again since you reminded me.
Thanks for posting from your experience and views. Keeping on the look out for a more sophisticated controller, in part to run DCC trains but until then I am planning to research and try out rocrail or perhaps see if there is a trial version of other software out there.

Mark
