Hi all, Yesterday I foundation this beautiful locomotive at a flee market. Box is marked 3084 and I managed to figure out that it’s a model of a “BR-50”. I remember I had a very small Märklin starter kit as a Christmas present. Probably in the later part of the 70-tis. I probably cost my parents a large part of their income so I didn’t have the opportunity to develop my interest. Could anyone please tell me more about the BR50? Is it old? Is it collectible? How does it compare to modern digital locos? Br Peter

It was a desirable loco at the time, today its just a loco, no particular value and when it comes to collecting Märklin locos its one of a thousand, its not rare therefore it is available in numbers on ebay, the loco does its job when it comes to a freight locomotive, so far a loco is concerned it would give any Märklin enthusiast as smile on their face to own one and this depends how old you are, since than many newer freight locos have been produced and as they say if you're the one who counts rivets, its not a model you would acquire. this loco is still in my collection of freight locos but somewhat modernized, its digital.

Thanks For your reply. Much appreciated. Do you know how old the loco is? I also wonder if the different locos have different power (speaking of the Märklin ones...). Apparently the different generations of the locos have differences. I read that som of them are “digital”. Is it to control the engine?

Hello
the 3084 was produced from 1974 to 1996, it is a analog loco with the old or classic electromecanical reverse unit.
It is possible to upgrade to digital with the 60760 (the cheaper decoder), and thenyou get all the advantages of multi-train traffic.
I have the 3684 upgraded with a 6090 decoder and runs very well, smooth like silk.
best regards

Hi,
that's a really nice loco and they have been very popular over the years. I'm guessing your one is 1970's vintage because of the box. There is usually a date code on the boxes somewhere that will help establish the year.
The loco can easily be upgraded to digital as others have said, and if you are keen the digital can include multiple functions to make not just the lights switchable, but the smoke unit too, and potential for sound if you want to blow the budget!
Cheers....
Mike
