I remember them in those colours from my student days 1977-1980. I was always looking out for an "Intercity 125". They were so futuristic looking beside the Southern EMUs that I normally saw.

I guess they haven't aged too badly either! ThumpUp

This train saved British Rail - I still remember my first trip on one as a school boy; watching out for the mileposts on the way to Wales and then calculating whether we had reached 125 miles/hour or not. BigGrin

These Sulzer-engined streamliners were quite magnificent.
A fitting descendant for the steam A4 class streamliners.

The New South Wales railway even built them in Australia, under licence I guess.
(Suitably modified for a warmer climate)

Come to think of it, how about Hornby do an A4 steamer in an Intercity 125 livery.
That would be a hoot ..... and a seller I imagine.

It is perhaps worth mentioning that although the HST sets have now been withdrawn from the long distance GWR and East Coast routes, shortened sets will continue to run on the GWR and in Scotland under brand names Castle and Intercity7. With refurbishment this could be up to twenty years. The power cars were all re-egined with MTU units some years back. The Midland route out of London will also see there use for another year after the then transport secretary cacelled electrification..

A bit like the famous Routemaster bus, the HST could be re-engined and re-seated and go on forever with routine maintenance. Could there be a secondary market for small private operators of budget and 'all around the houses' services? Like Flixtrain in Germany?

While it might be nice to see, continued use of HST stock is not a simple matter as regulations require the fitting of power doors and retention toilets from this year. This is not a simple matter as demonstrated by the delays in getting the refurbished trains back in service. On the other hand it might be the only way to keep the excursion market going since the mark one stock currently in use clearly does not fit the regulations.

All these new regulations, stifle business and increase costs. Some good, and some ridiculous. THE RICH GET RICHER AND FEWER, AND THE POOR GET POORER AND INCREASE GREATER NUMBERS.
