I believe it is the analogue motor. I would think it could be converted to digital, as the motor will be the same as the smaller loks of Mother M. (3000, 3087, et al.). I am searching a bit deeper; some others may have more info. Jimmy |

These were later discontinued and more recently replaced by the "My world" range. Some members were reminded of a British science fiction TV series called "Space 1999" which was set on a future moon base (1999 ). The base in the series was called "Moon Base Alpha" as I recall. I hope this helps to explain the above posts! |

Hi, It not very known that Märklin sold the trucks of the ALPHA - line after the end in the Märklin- assortment under the GAMA brand in a dark-grey/silver colour - scheme as "Adventure Truck". Regards Markus

Marcus, I did not know that at all...Alpha (Beta) Gama? Also, apparently the dealers got a little promo item (which seems a bit pricey, but may be really rare) in silver = another Alpha-First? (Well after the SchienenZeppelin of course): https://www.ebay.com/itm/MB-Maer...-Inc-Socle-/263001919799 Jimmy |

Interesting that the black (or grey, depending on you PoV) are plain without the neon green windows which I thought all the black items had. I think Alpha had been out for around 3 years at this point. Somewhere I have a tabloid sized 'newspaper' that was done for introduction of Alpha, when only hte red items were in the range. I recall it being 1987 or 88 that I got it.

Hi, That chrome version was given to the dealers in 1991 when ALPHA was relaunched with the introduction of the black/grey models. It has a funny "original-box": It came in a simple, transparent plastic-bag. GAMA* was a well known toy manufacturer in Germany. Märklin acquired the name when they bought TRIX in 1996. BTW: From mid 1990 ALPHA was produced by PIKO. For some weeks (until the German unification October 3rd 1990) ALPHA was "Made in GDR". Regards Markus * https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gama_Toys

The Alpha locomotives use a modified chassis from the BR 89, 3104 (also used in several start sets.) (it has no front coupler and the cylinders are cut off)

It's still a modified chassis from the 3104 series, but a better phrasing is " part of the cylinders are cut off" but have a look at the drawings and conclude for yourself 3104 exploded drawing: https://static.maerklin.de/damcontent/a4/a7/a4a7e0b8831e7c76533f35d1a7f847451434542014.pdfAlpha exploded drawing: https://static.maerklin.de/damcontent/96/ec/96ec02c98517761081b3f84206bfec751434541866.pdfIf I remember correctly it's possible to use a 3104 shell on an alpha chassis, its clips on nicely. (i have tried it many years ago, probably had to remove the light but don't remember that detail) Back then a friend of mine had an Alpha, we also tuned the Alpha to go faster. We replaced the anchor with a 35xx series anchor, so the speed was significantly improved and it "needed" the spoilers to stay on the tracks.

There are so many other things going on in that picture that it took me a bit to realize the train is not actually an Alpha-Class... |
