The images in this topic on another FB group are interesting, wondering if anyone else has seen (or has) anything similar or knows of them?

https://www.facebook.com...rmalink/478546562755807/

(the group is "Märklin H0/00 analog AC modeltrain 1935-84")

The first one was a label printed "IX", then another user added his printed "XIII"

My initial reaction was that they are Roman Numerals, so "9" & "13" respectively, but that's just a guess

For those not on FB, here are the images

Label "IX"

IX-1.jpg IX-2.jpg
IX-3.jpg IX-4.jpg

Label "XIII"

XIII-1.jpg
XIII-2.jpg

Cheers

The boxes and labels are all original so they don't look like a modification. I Googled the shop and a similar name came up as a department store in Holland but the label price is in DM so this is not where they were sold. Notice that the box had 2 price labels and one had been ripped off. Normally a store would place another on top of the original if the price had changed. It could have been a special order for a big store for say Christmas or something like that. They are certainly not calalogue sets.

Yes, 'De Bijenkorf' is a departmentstore in Holland, with stores in most cities.
It are chic stores, and not the usual budget departmentstores that we have here in Holland like HEMA and such.

But I don't see a pricetag in DM on any of the pictures. Confused
De Bijenkorf would certainly not use a DM pricetag.

I suspect one label was the price (removed) and the other looks like:

ZDH ????
LOCO
TRAFO
Dale
Intellibox + own software, K-Track

I think the price sticker has other lettering than DM. The top line looks to me like it might be ZDF rather than DM - it is definitely three letters.

Is there a Dutch abbreviation for Guilder that might be what the top line stands for?

Hi,

I read "ZONDER LOCO TRAVO" in three lines. Translated from Dutch this would mean "without loco and transformer".

Regards

I think the point of the post is missing here.

The query is about the labels on the END of the boxes where the normal set reference would be. As shown, they are a standard Marklin label, but different styles with "IX" and "XIII" respectively. Doesn't tell you much but it must have meant something to the store to identify them end-on sitting on the shelf.

And, if I may be bold enough, IF they are indeed Roman Numerals, and the highest is "13", then there are at least 13 possible variations and possibly more.

If the price label has any relevance, is it 'possible' that these were a 'custom' set of some sort, perhaps just for that store or a range of stores? Without knowing what was originally in the box it's only speculation of course.

We don't even know they held trains but I'd say it's the likely answer. They could even have held spares or accessories?

It's a bit like the puzzle I had a few years ago on some Wooden set boxes that appear to be unique to New Zealand. Some of those boxes carried the familiar starter set code on the end but the boxes and lids are numbered (to match each other) internally.

Here's that article for those that might have missed it first time round
