Hi,
This crane by Marklin was made most likely before WWII.
There are three symmetrical slots on the base (most likely meant to fix the crane).Their edges are painted in the same dark red brownish color so it seems they were made before the base was painted.Had they been made after the paint was applied, the edges would show the underlying metal.
On the other hand, two examples of this crane I have seen were without those slots but the lettering Marklin Germany was black, whereas this is yellow, indicating different year of production and therefore possibly slightly different design.
Your opinion in regard of those slots would be appreciated.

Either for securing the crane base, or maybe to insert some kind of counterweights into the slots...
It could however be something needed for the early manufacturing process too...

That's what I think when see it...

Thank you for being so kind and for your time to explain the possibilities. You must be an expert in technical issues with Consafe Logistics .
I also thought cutting such perfectly shaped slots is well outside the scope of an amateur. Moreover, painting the edges with the same colour makes no sense unless done in the factory during production process as you suggested.
Thanks again.
