Good Evening all,

I have just purchased a "New" Marklin 33081 BR85 with electronic ciruit for use in the Delta and Digital systems from ebay. When I first placed the Loco on my C Track and with power running and my MS2 connected the loco raced along the track and the only way I could stop it was to hit the STOP button. I have tried to programme the loco in the MS2 under New Loco "From Database" and scrolling through until I found 33081 BR85 001, after confirming this I had no function buttons showing and no control over the loco only with the stop button.

I then tried in New Loco "Find" with the stop button pressed the loco began to move at speed along my track, the display then came up with "DCC-0" and I had Lights, F1, F2, F3, icons on left side of screen but only the lights worked. I lifted the loco off the track and turned it around facing the opposite direction and again it only ran forwards. I removed the loco cover and looked at the jump switches inside, all were set for convetional running and I even tried setting them to the Delta / Digital positions but alas no change only runs forward and can only be stopped by pressing the stop button. I'm trying to test it on a 12ft straight length of track.

My patience have finally ran out after 5 hours of trying and £140 is a lot of money to sit boxed in a drawer or holding a door open.

Any help will be gratefully received.
Kind Regards
Richard

Sorry to be the bearrer of bad new, but I have a feeling that the decoder of that "new" loco is toast.
Whomever that sold this to you as "new" either had no clue, or worse hasn't disclosed all details on the condition of the object.

It could be set up in analogue mode (all switches off), which I beleive would result in the same behaviour. Check the handbook for the default setting for the address switches.

Thank you very much for that I have emailed the seller in Germany who has a lot of "new" locos for sale. Would it be possible to replace the decoder? and are they cheap?
Thanks

I've had top off the loco and all the switches are to conventional mode even switching them to Delta mode has no effect.

Thank you very much

The decoders are not particularly expensive. (somewhere between 30 and 50$)
But you need someone with good soldering skils to install it properly, and then program it so the lok will function properly.
Since you took the top off, can you share a couple of pictures of the inside?
We may be able to make a more accurate/appropriate suggestion

If it is a delta or even older digital decoder the MS2 won't find it I think unless it is an MFX decoder. As far as using the database function, it would be useless if the dip switches are thrown to something that isn't what is in your database. Use an old sheet that has the dip switch table, set it to a particular number and then manually add that to your MS2. Try that before giving up.

Hello Jacques

I have created an album with 16 images in of the afore mentioned Loco without the top on for you to look at, As you can see the switches are all set to standard mode and nothing looks burnt or damaged as far as I can see.

Thanks for you assistance
warmest wishes
Richard

Hi A7Bicester.

im not sure if you solved the issue already but to make the MS2 find the loco you need to manually enter the loco adress by adding a new loco by doing this: shift+red loco button -->new loco-->Enter manually--> MM2 coding switches. then enter loco adress of your choosing (which you can find out here by clicking the switches on and off http://www.nederlof.net/marklin/ )

I highly doubt that the decoder is fried if it is indeed new because i have old delta engines too which have seen some abuse (mostly my first loco. A green DHG700 out of a starter set when i was about 6 years old and it still works completely fine!)

Hope this helps BigGrin

Address on that should be 78. That is switch 1 up & 2,3,& 4 down. Enter address 78 on you controller & see what happens.

Dont worry you wont break anything once the shell is taken off delta decoders are pretty bulletproof.
heres some pictures to help you out Wink

PDF of the manual with spare part numbers to use in future( the model is a bit newer in this but it uses the same moulds so most of the stuff still applies)

@A7Bicester

are you shure this loco is digital?

Looking at the explosion drawing listed by @Dave Banks post #13, then the part #34 in the spare parts list looks like a "Fahrtrichtungsschalter" (direction-of-travel switch). Never seen a digital loco with such a switch inside. These switches were used for analogue locos. A decoder I could not find in the explosion sheet.

Also the motor looks like a 3-pole engine instead of a 5-pole high effinciency one.

BTW I bought via eBay an old loco as well, which was offered as a digital one. When it arrived, no documentaton were supported and the loco showed the same running behaviour as you describe. I opened the loco and well it was not digital. It is analogue one.

but if you google märklin 33081 you can see that it says Delta on the packaging. the same explosion sheet also has item number 37095 which is a lot newer and uses an FX decoder. i think märklin was just lazy and didn't bother to change the diagram for delta/FX/MFX locos because it uses the same moulds and parts as the analog version.

Hello Teewolf, the exploded diagram covers the analog/delta/digital versions. You will see small inset diagrams admittedly not very clear covering the delta & later on the digital setup. It is only a sketch of the way it is connected but does show the boards. #33081 is a Delta version. If Richard would be so good as to upload a photo of the electronics of the loco following Antti explanation of how to get the shell off then we will all have a clearer picture of what we are dealing with.

Yay Some success, I have done what you advised here and I have control over the loco at last using the MS2. I went in to "Enter Manually" then "MM2 Coding Switches" and changed the address to 78, this gave me normal operating functions over the loco. (Forward, Reserve, Speed, Start & Stop).

Do I also have to set the address to 78 under the "MM2 Programmable" & "DCC" menus as well?

On the MS2 screen on the left hand side I have the following: "Lightbulb" Icon - F1 - F2 - F3. On the Top right hand side of the screen, a "Turtle" icon, When I press any combination of the buttons nothing happens.

Were getting there slowly and I thank all who have helped me in sorting the problem out, the "Seller" is just not interested and refuses and contact with me. I feel the need for some negative feedback.

Nothing should happen, since it's a DELTA decoder. Some of them have "lights on/of", others have not.

I think you got exactly what you paid for and as described Cool

Calling it a "Delta / digital" is quite normal, even though it's only Delta, and not really full digital as we're used to in newer locs.

( And yes Goofy, I know that Delta is digital, just a simpler version BigGrin )

glad to hear you got the old gal working! Laugh the functions F1, F2 and F3 are just default functions for FX and MFX locos they wont do anything on a Delta loco. If you enter a delta loco through MM2 programmable the MS2 thinks that its just a regular FX loco and gives you the functions. On a Delta locomotive you only have forward and reverse and a constant smoke unit if the loco supports it. If you have an FX loco with some functions for example a whistle one of the function buttons (F1, F2, F3) would activate it. the "turtle" function is a standard feature on every FX and MFX and it basically just disables the acceleration and breaking delays or in short "direct control"

I saw a youtube video of this model and it had sound funtions, Breaking, moving, whistle etc so I assumed mine would have the same functions, looks like I've been had again, £140 is a lot of outlay for a train which which only goes forwards & backwards, could have brought two anolog locos for that price. Don't think I'll be buying more so called digital railway stuff anymore just stick to Hornby. Very disappointed.

BIG THANKS TO ALL THOSE WHO HAVE OFFERED ME HELP IN THE PAST.

Were getting there slowly and I thank all who have helped me in sorting the problem out, the "Seller" is just not interested and refuses and contact with me. I feel the need for some negative feedback.

glad to hear you got the old gal working!

BIG THANKS TO ALL THOSE WHO HAVE OFFERED ME HELP IN THE PAST.

sorry to hear that this one bad apple of a seller ruined digital for you. £140 for this loco is quite a lot for what it is but if you want to find better deals i would actually suggest you use the german ebay (ebay.de) a lot more reasonably priced stuff and a greater selection. you can actually find some sound locos for about £110. granted the sounds are somewhat basic or limited but atleast they are fully digital. but if the era isin't an issue you can actually get a Br 245 with full sound and MFX for about £120 which is a great deal! here is a link in case you are interested ( https://www.ebay.de/itm/...99f60:g:nm0AAOSwCcZZ9twl )
