In the middle you will see the pick up (small studs) your slider on the loco gets power from these with the return on the two outside rails. Both Roco and Piko do three rail locos but until you understand fully the Marklin system you might be better to stay with Marklin and branch out later. Take your time and before buying a product which might not be suitable. PS I presume you are talking about locos etc and not the actual track.
		Take care I like Marklin and will defend the worlds greatest model rail manufacturer.

Incorrectly it is always said 3-rail system, which is not true. Because 2 out of the 3 rails have the same electrically mass. These little spikes between the 2 bars are the 3rd rail and generally called "puko". It comes from the German word "Punktkontakte" (PuKo) = dot pins. Over these pukos Maerklin lays the traction current. Whereas over the 2 rails left and right of the pukos Maerklin lays the mass. Still there are three rails if you accepts that only studs are visible of the third rail - there is a third rail under the trackbed. It is "three-rail", but it is not "Dreileiter".
