Hello everyone, summer is just about coming to an end here in South Dakota and school starts next week. I have not been around much on the forum since my trip to Deutschland in April. I missed this place, feels good to be back. I am trying to determine which model this SK 800 is for a friend of mine. He bought it five years ago and we are trying to determine which version it is. I am thinking it might be version 16 because of the Haftreifen, but The tender seems to have version five Couplers..... What are your thoughts?

1947 – 1959: Redesigns and the SK 800 N Already by this time, and undoubtedly with the release of the 1947 catalog D 47, the completely redesigned SK 800 N was introduced. Everything from the wheel linkages which now featured red paint striping to the spoked tender wheels was changed. Some interesting in-between models exist as a cross between an SK 800 E and an SK 800 N, mostly with parts that could easily be interchanged like trailing trucks with spoked wheels and linkages with red painted stripes. Otherwise, the models were very different in design. The new SK 800 N also had either closed brush covers (from 1951 onward) which meant the brushes couldn’t be changed without removing the entire locomotive shell or a brush cover flap not dissimilar to the pre-war design. On the upside, however, the new design featured cleverly placed holes to allow oiling of internal gears and motor components which was very important to smooth operation of the locomotive. Other design changes up to the end of production in 1959 include a “MARKLIN” inscription on the front of the locomotive.

This is the earliest version that was produced with traction tires (which yours has). The first two years (1954/55) the tender had type 5 couplers and the last three years (1956-58) The tender had type 6 couplers. Since the tender is not physically attached to the locomotive it is always possible that there is a mismatch with the engine and tender. This mismatched pairing occurs often - probably due to the possibility of tenders destroyed by corrosion (using real coal) that were replaced by other SK800 version tenders. Earlier SK800 tenders are often cracked due to zinc pest so you'll see tender replacements with earlier versions too. Kurt |

Good info so far, thank you . Right now I am wondering if it might be a version 17 from 1954-55 or 1957-58, since it has the Haftreifen and Type 5 Kupplung. or a version 20 from 1959. I'll have to get a picture of the front of the locomotive & post it up. Rich

Hi, one very important info is missing to define the version , you have to look at the name MÄRKLIN in front of the loco. When version 20 has got a flange (German = Spurkranz) at the middle wheel, this one is version 21 or 22.... Wolf

3 domes, closed brush cover and NO traction tires is typical for Koll Version 16 .

Based on the photo of the front of the SK800 it appears to be a version 17. Version 20 has shorter height lettering for the Marklin name on the nose. Check out the photos posted by
LMS800
and you can see the difference in the letter height between the V17 and the V20. So my best guess is that the SK800 is a version 17 produced between the years 1954-1958. Kurt |
